Chimay and ukrm feckwits (longish)

  1. Then you show a remarkable lack of awareness about how other people
will take your words. Your words about Palestinians, your trite little
phrases about other UKRM posters that you trot out - all designed to
make other people think of you as a clueless troll.

For a teacher you show very little communications ability.

I couldn't name names even if I wanted to, Nick, for in looking at the
shots posted so far, I'm struck by how few of the faces are familiar to me.
You, Ginge, TOG, Champ, and (I think) SteveH. The others could walk past
me on a crowded street and I wouldn't know 'em from Adam.

OK, maybe no one'd want to punch my lights out (I abhor violence), but I
believe the insults and/or cold shoulder which you describe, would be
    almost as unpleasant.
    Rendez-vous 2008, then?

Are you trying to tell me that you are as 'hurt' or 'offended' by someone
calling you a thick **** (as an example -- choose another one that would
hit closer to home) on here, as you would be if they called you it in the
    street ?

    It's becoming clearer.

Here we have a guy sitting in an old pair of jeans in Paris. This guy's
sitting typing on his Mac to Usenet, and granted he _does_ come out with
some rather choice words and rather insan^H^H^Hstrongly expressed opinions.
Opinions which, incidentally, he'd never express in public in 'real life'.
Not just because he'd risk getting his teeth rammed down his throat, but
also because it's just not in his nature to insult people. His online
persona is rude, arrogant and opinionated but in real life, he's known as a
thoughtful, polite, softly-spoken gentleman (to quote the secretary at my
    school).

Now on the other side of the water, we have a newsgroup with maybe fifty
relatively regular posters, and maybe a dozen of those who bother their
arses reading this **** in Paris. Now they read the stuff posted by the
same Parisian diarist and they point at their screens in disbelief and
exclaim, 'who does this twat think he is?'

We have a problem of communication, I think.

On the one hand, I allow myself the luxury of responding almost violently
in a manner I'd never dare do in real life, precisely because to me, Usenet
    _isn't_ real life.

And on the other, you lot read what I write, and seem to be saying, 'well
it's only words, but it _is_ real life!'.

So here I am, scratching my head and saying, 'what are they getting so
upset about what I write for ??', and there you are, scratching your head
and saying, 'if he posts this stuff, how can he be surprised that we hate
    his guts??'

Would the above be an accurate assessment of the situation?

So on the one hand, I have to 'think' before posting, reminding myself that
some people out there might not have the same sarcastic sense of humour
that I have ... and on the other hand, you lot should read my posts and
tell yourself, 'he doesn't _mean_ to abuse us...'

    <>:

The issue with your posts, from my perspective, isn't that they are any
ruder than anyone elses. It's the fact that they degrade into threads
that are terminally boring with you adopting what appears to be a
schoolboy type persona insisting you've "won" all the time etc.

It's not only the fact it's you in the threads that bores me to tears,
it's everyone else. There's little in the way of humour.

Then, we compound that with the oft expressed persecution complex and,
well, to be blunt it's a more interesting place when you're not here.

You state that the arrogant, sarcastic poster isn't your real life
persona, all well and good. However it is your real life person that
makes those posts which make this NG a more tedious place than I'd like
it to be; I suspect that's what people take umbrage at (assuming others
have similar views to I and, to be blunt, it's not something that
exercises much thought on my part.)

  11. I don't know if it will do any good but I would just like to point out
at this stage that I am not a cantankerous senile old git who smells of
wee, it is just my Usenet persona.

I doubt it, a few might be pushing to the front to take pictures, a
few might turn their backs and ignore it but the majority would stop
    any violence taking place.

An outfit - well, my outfit, anyway - is sensitive and responsive to changes
in speed, camber, gradient, loading, throttle position etc, rotates around
all three axes as well as deflecting along them. Gyp recently opined that
the whole thing seemed to be made of rubber. Driver input isn't the
smallest of these influences, by a long chalk, so a deceased driver will
certainly have an effect on the progress of the outfit. Whether or not this
is a beneficial effect is possibly best determined by experimentation.

That's the point where we strongly differ. Usenet is not real life, but
an extension of it (ok, this assumes one has a real life...) Most of us
have met some other newsgroups participants in the flesh (or have had
interaction with their real life, for instance by helping them
buy/fix/sell the bloody bike). Now, of course, this requires to have
social skills slightly above those of an oyster, and not considering
    newsgroups as a release for one's "mal-être".
