In all seriousness, I didn't think 'new' Triumph was unreliable compared
to Japanese or European. Certainly no more unreliable.

Mine wasn't that massively reliable either, though.

Certainly had its share of problems under my ownership as well,
although they all seemed to have been resolved by about 12000 miles.
And it had spent a large part of its life being used in all weathers,
never cleaned, and generally abused by me.

Whereas the gixxer, which never missed a beat, was really carefully
cleaned, at least once a year :) It was, at least, kept in the garage
every night from new and rarely used in winter or shitty weather if I
    could avoid it.

So from that sample of two, could I conclude that the Triumph was
unreliable? Well yes, I think so, given that its problems included:
seized (internal) chain adjustment; knackered front wheel bearings
(both at 9000 miles ish) ; leaking radiator (manufacturing fault, not
    a stone hole); blown coil (nippon denso item, but still);
disintegrating carbon can. Not many of those could really be
attributed to lack of care, could they?

But twins are so... industrial sounding. For best aural results, you
    can't beat a triple.

Who are you and what have you done with the real Ace?
Not the majority I'd guess. I had almost constant problems with the
fuel system (that was back in the day when Triumph denied that there
was any problem with the quick-release plastic connectors) - I think I
went to the dealer five or six times because it was either filling
various orifices with petrol that weren't supposed to be (like the
electrics compartment at the back of the tank) or it was pissing fuel
out of a joint or three.

And the finish wasn't too good either.

Well, at least once in the first year, anyway...
That was what struck me as odd, or possubly just the normal
Timo-effect, as for >25000 miles it had never had any wich problems. I
guess spending a winter outside Veggie's gaff may have been not
    unrelated?
Which is where cleaning may have helped, but yes, it was shit,
especially all the exposed powder-coated bits. The footrest hangers
were the worst, as they were first coated, then ground down leaving a
raw edge of the coating, almost guaranteed to start peeling at the
    first hint of salt.

Ah well, if you're going to get proper silly, you might as well go the
whole hog and get a V8. Not hugely practical on two wheels, to be
sure. But then it was you who mentioned the Valkyrie.

I dunno. I love a good triple on song, but a 360 degree parallel twin
has a snarl that is really visceral, and a good vee-twin like a Duke
    makes music.

Fours just sound... well, dull. Tell you what does sound glorious - my
neighbour has one of those 1500 Valkyrie customs: you know, the Gold
Wing derived things. And it has slightly naughty end cans, and that flat
    six sounds superb.

Oddly enough, I doubt for once that it was the Timo Distortion Field -
at the time there were a lot of people all over the world who had the
same problems with the connectors. They seemed to age prematurely from
the engine heat and then crack/not seal properly if you had to
disconnect them. Like, for changing the air filter...

Probably an oldfart thing, but for me nothing beats the sound of a big
single saying DOOF DOOF DOOF at every 2nd lamp post.

Not necesssarily. I like big singles too. In fact, there's a chap who
often commutes on a Matchless along a fair part of my usual route.
    Lovely sound.

A standard road 4 with the OE retrictive can does sound dull, but the
howl of a race tuned 4 at full chat is pretty good too.

  20. Some singles sound nice, but they don't make music. The big single
racers at Chimay got close to the pain threshold.

    (The 50cc two-strokes exceeded it)
