Yet the phrase outlasted both the initial fact and the bulk of the
    British bike industry.

You must be too young to remember the terminology in popular use when the
Japanese motorcycle invasion was in its infancy. It took a long time for
the cheap ripoff copies to evolve into decent machines.

Being old does not necessarily make a bike a classic. How many 500/4s
do you see with original chromework for example.

It took them considerably less time to do so than the entire lifespan
of the old British motorcycle industry, which was inevitably overtaken
and made obsolete in comparatively short order.
Get with the now, grandad. Anyway, chrome doesn't make it go faster.

Really? Were you there? Even the early stuff that started to corner
various market niches in the mid 1960s (and I'm thinking, for example,
of the C50) was better, in any objective sense, than almost anything
else available at the time. In fact, I'm struggling to think of any of
the early jap imports that would warrant that description,

Very damp here (Reading) but my toms are fine, the grapes are coming
on really well, the herb patch is burgeoning and the hazel tree
promises a fine harvest again. And I don't have to water the hanging
    baskets.

I harvested some cherries and mirabelles, but wasn't really fit enough
for tree-climbing to get a decent crop. Similarly most of the red-.
blue-[1] and blackcurrants were left on the bush, and I've only used
one batch of rhubarb the whole summer.

But on a brighter note, I've just bought a petrol brushcutter (big
strimmer), which is infinitely better than the old B&D we had before.

I can find no English word for " a redcurrant deseeded with a goose
