Not necesssarily. I like big singles too. In fact, there's a chap who
often commutes on a Matchless along a fair part of my usual route.
    Lovely sound.

A standard road 4 with the OE retrictive can does sound dull, but the
howl of a race tuned 4 at full chat is pretty good too.

  6. Some singles sound nice, but they don't make music. The big single
racers at Chimay got close to the pain threshold.

    (The 50cc two-strokes exceeded it)

No problems with my Trident other than the sprag clutch failing at about
12K miles (and again at 16K, but then fixed properly by Alf's of Worthing)
    - both partly paid-for by Triumph. Now done 37K - which admittedly isn't
much in itself, especially in 10 years! - and hasn't missed a beat. Top
gear is sounding a bit noisy now, though, but no other reliability
problems. I'd heard of an identical model doing 250K in three years, which
was for me the clincher in buying it. The engine certainly feels
    bulletproof.

However now that I'm thinking of buying a Tiger 1050 I wonder if the Trident
will throw a strop and start playing up...

Which we later find out were actually needed.
The routine maintenance schedule? It does appear to have been pretty
    poor.
That's only 0.020" extra wear from when it should have had a first
    rebore.
Apart from ignoring the need for a rebore.
Two more owners not smart enough to see the need for a rebore.
Most bikes are quiet when either pushed or chugged along at 25mph
    because the engines wanked.

The LE was underpowered with 6hp from the 150cc and over engineered -
IIRC a new LE cost very nearly twice as much as a new Bantam so it's
not really surprising that they were relatively long lasting. BTW the
Met lifed the LE at 60,000 miles not 100,000.

Nah, the grading of rebores in 0.010" is just another case of rip-off
    Britain.

My neighbour had a Benelli 900 Sei with a 6-into-1, with what looked like a
VW Beetle tailpipe. The engine sounded like a bag of spanners, but the
    exhaust note was exhilarating.

Is Keith's Laverda (Jota?) the 120 motor?
Oh yeah, or even the Benelli, if you can tune out the rattly
    exhausts...

Cheap shit engines might be bored out in larger increments and have
fewer options available but every engine worth fixing is bored out in
    0.010" increments.

The Met could destroy anything, and they had more money.
    Only the Mk1 was 150cc, the Mk2 and Mk3 were 198cc 8bhp @ 5500 rpm.
Getting rid of the Mk1 needle big ends and adding an oil filter make
the engines last a lot longer.
But yes, they were overengineered and could have done with more power
but the fundamental design was limited by side valves and low compression.
Running on pool petrol was a requirement.

Puttering along country lanes on a siLEent listening to the birds sing .
    PRICELESS.

I was wearing my earplugs, so I could relax and appreciate the sound without
being tense about hearing damage. Anyway, what's all this girly "music"
shit? You want the fuckers to snarl like deadly serious competitive racing
motorcycles, not plop along like a diesel dumper truck.

  20. RGS, Corse, RGA, Corsa SFC et al used the 120 motor.
