  1. No, Claire has a depressingly good sense of direction.
I've lost count of the number of times that we've found
the house/street/thing we are looking for by what seems
    like blind luck.

in the late 80s, on a whim, me and my mates Marc and Tully decided to
drive from Bangor NI to Dun Loughaire to see the sublime Microdisney.
I'd never been to Dun Loughaire before, but knew it was "somewhere
just the other side of Dublin".

So, into the car we got, and headed off - drove through Dublin town
centre, crossed the river and headed south a bit.

Decided to stop and ask some people milling around where Dun Loughaire
    was, conversation like this:

Me: which way to Dun Loughaire
Bloke with pint: you're there already
Me: looking for the Microdisney gig
BWP: it's at The Top Hat
    Me: where's that
    BWP: see that turn-off?
    Me: yes
BWP: that's the carpark for it.

Job done. Never /quite/ been as spookily directionally accurate as
    that since, mind.

  5. No you aren't.
I like to have the appropriate map - provided I have one I can usually
get anywhere I need to get to with little difficulty.

Sorry darcers but this reply makes it just too unbelievable. Now if you
had said he came back with:
"and why would you be wanting to go to Dun Loughaire?"

  7. Solid State, mate.

Inflation was so high then, if you punched in 20 quid it gave you 23.

The price index for January 1967 was 15.66, and January 1968 16.07,
giving an annual inflation rate of 2.6% Meaning that your 20 quid
should have been corrected to £20 10 shillings and 5d

  11. It does indeed; thank you, Mister Murray.

Actually, going by memory and not the official figures, it certainly
seemed much higher than 2.6%; more like 10 or 15%. I'm probably
transposing memories of the early 70s onto the late 60s, but I
distinctly remember newscasters talking about inflation rates of 10% and
    more.
