No, the engine still works. But one of the silencers has a big rusty hole,
and the rear brake disc is hanging by a thread.

Which all makes an interesting contrast to the shiny new MOT it came with.

Shouldn't be difficult for them to fix, considering the alternative.
I share your lack of doubt, but they won't be *my* problems.

Well, sometimes, you just *have* to. I wouldn't have bothered, if it
hadn't have been for the pipe making such a racket, and the fact that
there was a young lady in the passenger seat.

More to the point, the Wing didn't have to be nailed to achieve this,
    either.

  9. I would have missed the coffee stop. Anyroadup it was only the -getting
out of Calais- that was PITA. The expected nice bit of road connecting
up villages never materialised until much further down towards Chepy...

  13. How is getting out of Calais a PITA?

The autoroute starts at the entrance to the port and goes all the way to
Marseilles, Berlin or Barcelona, depending on which turning you take
    later on[1].

    *Baffled*.

[1] As prophesised, come the very first intersection on the autoroute,
where you peel off left for Boulogne and Rouen, right for Dunkirk or go
straight on for Paris, the ukrm gaggle of bikes scattered like
    starlings.
[2] Niall's excuse for getting lost on a road he's used at least fifty
times before was: "I was following two fat blokes[3] but they turned out
    not to be with ukrm.
[3] He thought they were me and Nigel Eaton.

  14. This was alarming. I've never seen so much play on a disc brake's rivets
before. And no, it isn't meant to be a floating disc either.

I got the impression that one firm right bootful would rip the thing
    right off the carrier.

Didn't know about the holey silencer, though.

I do it the easy way:

1 - Head out of Calais on the start of the autoroute (A26) towards wherever.
2 - Follow signs for "tunnel sous la manche" which will get you through the
right turn onto the A16 direction Boulogne. This bit is free, ie no peage.
3 - Leave the A16 at Boulogne Jn29 before things get expensive. This puts
you seamlessly onto the N1, which is one of thos nice roads. Or the D940,
if you can find the turn-off.

Okay, your first 20 or 30 miles in France are on the autoroute, but it's a
nice swoopy bit of autoroute, and it's only 10 miles or so to the first aire
    with fuel.

My view also, which is why I didn't use it all the way home. Thank **** it
wasn't a Honda (or a BMW), as I might not have had that option.
It's on the seam where the narrow cone is welded onto the broad cone at the
front of the silencer. Not the lower point and not a drain hole either,
goes along the weld line for something like half an inch. Dunno if it's an
MOT failure for sure, but it's not what I would expect to see on a
properly-prepared bike from a reputable dealer.

  19. ROFL.

Scene - Ferry docks, exit, parking apron, and beyond that, massive
autoroute with all signs pointing at it and to the right, a tony single
track road that threads its way past the cement works to
    God-knows-where.

Three hundred vehicles leave the ferry. Two hundred and ninety-eight
piss off via the autoroute exit. Two Brit-registered bikes disappear
    behind the cement works....
