Depends. If you want to fix a puncture or make a milkshake, it won't be
any use at all. If you want to weld a couple of lumps of steel
together, it might do the job, but a MIG would be a better buy in the
    long run.

    Oh, my aching sides.
But a MIG would cost at least 5 times more.

Come to think of it, I can't remember why I've ever had need of a
welder, but I suspect it'll be much like the angle grinder or the
compressor: once you've got one, you'll wonder how you managed without
    it.

    *boggle*

Are you *sure* about that? How could owning a combat aircraft be
anything other than A Good Thing?

    Shouldn't be a problem - they're based on the Saab 95 floorpan[1],
which in turn is based on the Golf floorpan.

[1] As are all military fighter jets, except French ones which use a
custom made chassis to support the funny suspension struts.

  5. Certainly for shooting up cargo ships. A welder is bugger all use for
    that.

Ah but think how much fun it'd be to strap a rocket to ken's back &
fire him into a cargo ship.

Translated from the MIG-29 owners handbook (available on Emule):

"This aircraft can be used for welding providing the afterburners are
    operational[1][2]"

    And the footnotes read:

    1. Ensure the workpiece is held securely.
    2. Not advisable for small parts

    so there you are, comrade.

For welding large lumps of metal, yes. For welding thin metal, ie,
motorcycle exhausts, car bodywork, no. For deseam welding on Minis, yes.
    For patching panels, no.

    DAMHIK,IJDA.

One thing they are bloody useful for is creating buckyballs.

Go buy it anyways, after all, like an angle grinder, it is fun to misuse.

I'd say at the price, it's well worth the gamble. In fact I'm tempted
    myself.

Bad form and all that, but "as you were". It's a stick welder and I thought
it was a MIG. It can stay on the shelf for me, even at 35 squids.

Bet they've sold out by the time I get there, anyway.

He's certainly the benchmark for welders which are not actually any use.

This would be fine if you wanted to repair a steel gate, or make a simple
bike trailer. Thing to remember though is that stick welding is much more
difficult to do than MIG, and either process is made harder to do, if you
have to contend with shoddy equipment.

Interesting! I thought that pre-fitted plugs were a legal requirement
    these days?

Indeed. I thought - no, I'm sure that there is a requirement for all
electrical equipment to be fitted with a plug.

Neither is there any mention of the 'duty cycle' which is a vital
point of reference and comparison with welders.

Indeed, the longer the better but if it's as short as the pricetag may
suggest, it should be thin and easy enough to cut into small pieces with
an angle grinder so you'll still get your fun ;-)
