cheap tyres

    M&P direct are flogging Dunlop Qualifiers for £140 a pair this weekend
    only. Seems like a good price so anyone frightened off by the Michelin
    recall might be interested.

    The reason I ask is that the 190/55 rear the '06 uses is usually £122.

    180/55 or 190/50

    The 180/55 will make your bike turn a bit quicker so could make all
    the difference to your riding.

    I think I'll just wait until the rear is worn, and see what the sensible
    option is at the time. There's likely to be a bit more choice for
    190/55 rubber next year now it's on the 1098 as well as the 10R, and
    this one should see me through the rest of monsoon season..

    A Dunlop 180/55 is a 190. There's not much room between chain and tyre
    on my old gixxer with a Michelin, and none at all with a Dunlop, so I
    know about these things.

    Be pefectly honest, Ginge. Do you really think you'll notice the
    difference? So many litre bikes use a 190/50 with no ill effects -
    what makes you think a 190/55 will make your bike handle any better
    for the use you put it to.

    It's my opinion that you won't even notice the difference in profiles,
    I can hardly ever tell whether I'm on a 180 or 190, whatever the
    profile. Buy some Pilot Road2, they've done me fine on the Daytona and
    are hardly worn after 3500 miles, they feel much better than the 010s
    that were on it as OE. If you really must have supersports tyres then
    how about Pilot Powers, the non 2CT type? Graham at GLF has had them
    on his Fazer Thou for a year or two and rates them highly as fast road
    tyres, and even on trackdays where he's no slouch. Qualifiers may well
    be excellent tyres if you're a riding god, but they'll be well squared
    off and feel fucking awful in 1000 miles with normal use.

    To be pefectly blunt, I think there's an awful lot of bollocks talked
    about the 'need' for sticky tyres, the majority of people would be
    hard pushed to use the full potential of a good sports/touring tyre,
    let alone something stickier. Most people wouldn't even get enough
    heat into something like a Qualifier to make it work properly, which
    says to me a quality sports/touring tyre or a normal supersports tyre
    would actually be a safer and more cost effective option.

    Oddly enough my rear qualifier is already over 2000 miles old and fairly
    evenly worn all over.

    Tyres are cheaper than panels, so a few quid more isn't a bad investment
    really.

    I'm not surprised you agree with him. The only way you'd get any heat
    in a sports tyre is with a blow torch.

  17. Yes I agree and I often breeze past "riders" on sportsbikes, especially
    if the road is anything other than dead straight for as far as the eye
    can see.
