Last year I went hover crafting for an afternoon and the bloke running
it was nearly as old as me and an ex world champion or something. He
told me that there came a time when although he was quite happy to
thrash the nuts off it solo, every year brought a new crop of fearless
kiddies who "would go for the gap regardless." He reckoned that any
more winter aches and pains he was going to collect would be his own
doing and not someone else's so he gave up competing at serious levels
and faffs about with grown up shit like endouro and driving tests and
stuff.
