  5. You use stainless screws because if you don't the wood treatment that
    preserves the timber will rot through steel screws or nails within 5
    years, even if they are plated. The Tommy Walsh nail gun built decks
    will fall apart in 5 years guaranteed.

    What I did was strip the upper terrace back to the marine ply flat roof,
    skinned it with quarter inch ply stapled down ( with pneumatic staple
    guns) to give me a clean surface. Laid a one piece membrane of EPDM
    glued to the ply and walls dressed into the gutter. Layered that with
    Geotextile to protect it. On that laid batons down the slope of the roof
    then screwed the decking to that.

    The rail was then screwed onto a plate on the decking with external
    steel support from the wall beneath.
