Oh goody. I've got a nice little C prefix Polo for sale.....

......and you *CAN* tell you're not sitting inside a Mondeo.

Nope, BMW did a runner from Land rove a few years back. They kept the Mini,
but Rover and Land rover were split up. Ford bought Land rover, and IIRC
    Pheonix own Rover.

Yep, Thanks it was indeed. He did also make another brand, but that was
really obscure and I doubt I'd ever remember the name of, my old man would,
if he was here to tell me. RIP.

Someone used to do a 'shooting brake' conversion for the Jaguar XJS,
IIRC it was Banham. One of my neighbours in Norwich had one and I
thought it looked lovely. I've also seen an Aston Martin Vantage with
bodywork converted to an estate for an Arab dignitary. I did the leather
and carpet trimming in the boot area and made and fitted the new
headlining. A now defunct company in Shephards Bush did the bodywork.

I've seen a Porsche 928 towing a caravan in the Alps.

Fucking quickly, too, I might add.

BMW and Rover already have that one.

    Alfa Romeo have Sportwagon.

Besides, 'shooting brake' would be much more British, wouldn't it?

Are you sure about that, 'cos the base-model X-Type is cheaper than a
    Mondeo Ghia.

You can see why it sells so well.

  12. The image of a Jag with flimsy ally panels loosely held in place by
rotting timber and a pair of creaky leaky back doors doesn't quite cut
    it for me.

    Hmm.
I thought it was Cosmopolitan Bodies that did the mods on the Jags.
The same as the original "Mini Ragtop?" and rove 2000 estates.
    Prolly wrong though.

There are conversion firms all over the UK who do this kind of work. I
know of two companies in Olney, Bucks who stretch Vauxhall Omegas and
Merc E class for funeral directors and limo hire firms, and 4 complanies
at least in West London who do the same plus shooting vehicles for Arab
customers and who also do sub contract work for a company called Wood
and Pickett. Wood and Pickett, as they were back in the late 80s and
early 90s, used to be one of my customers. They were the firm who
pioneered luxury coversions to Minis. I've seen some bloody amazing
bodywork modifications done to all sorts of cars by them.

I used to collect W+P Minis on those rare occasions when they came up
for sale. I think I've had 9 or 10 of them now. The quality of the
conversions varies greatly, from excellent to downright shoddy. It all
depended on W+P's financial status at the time.
