We on the West coast of North America do get air pollution from Asia,
albeit in small quantities. There is an animated map that's been
broadcast that shows the simulated propagation of radioactive clouds
from Japan to NA. Of course, it's of a nuclear bomb, not a power plant
meltdown, but it's enough to set off the catastrophe freaks.

Of course, the Jet Stream accounts for that.
A nuclear bomb will send material that high. However.....
I'd be less scathing if people started moving right out of mid and northern
california about now. That would make a lot of sense.

No I don't think it is a f-u. The reactors and their housing have
exceeded their design specification. Would you make the same comment
if/when the Thames barrier is over-topped because of a 1-in-X,000 high
    tide with a NW'ly gale?

But not too much because the flare stacks on oil wells are also
radioactive. Don't forget that a major contributor to the radioactivity
in waters surrounding the UK is as a result of oil exploration and
    refinery.

Who, unlike the UK, have concentrated on designs that are from a single
"family" of reactors. The UK having previously decided to form competing
designs and therefore diluting the number of experts between the
different streams. We end up with PWRs, Advanced Gas, etc etc and no
team of experts skilled to deal with them all. Meanwhile the French
systems are all based on the same initial design and staff can safely
    operate between sites.

  7. I'd love to but somebody has to stay behind and look after the wimmin.
It's a rotten job but someone has to do it.

It's a GFU in PR terms. And today we have admissions of food contamination
at a significant distance. Tiny amounts, miniscule levels, but that isn't
the point. The reaction to nuclear issues is emotional.

Hand it to Cameron though, he cooked up an attention diverting situation in
    record time )

It seemed such a shame (at the time) that AGR was bungled by industrial
relations and the uncivil service but one can look back in hindsight and
suggest that a graphite moderated design isn't so great after all.

The base line is one can design inherent and passive safety and use less
hazardous fuel but the cost per Kwh goes up accordingly.

I guess an advantage is that if you find some design fault in one of them
you don't have to shut down the whole lot - there are parallels here to
the monoculture theory of information security.

Oh sure. It's all part of how fucked up the "Concerned Mothers" brigade are.
Coal mining and oil production claim staggering amounts of other mothers'
sons. Far beyond what Nuclear Power ever will.

I suppose it is. If you're going to quote it repeatedly, it would be
good if you could learn to spell it correctly.

Heh. At least it makes a change from the numerous incorrect spellings
of Gaddhaffi that have been flying around recently.
