You don't need SQL for that, you need a pencil and paper.

Fine if you're doing it for yourself - less so if you're doing it for
3000 clients, or want to run a series of 'what if' scenarios on a
    portfolio.

Journos know **** all about nuclear stuff, they just recycle the crap
that other journos have trotted out.

    It sells newspapers.

I haven't spent the past 30 years doing CGT for one of the country's
biggest life funds with my thumb up my bum, you know.

Surely, if you'd written it properly in the first place, you'd only
have to have written it once? :)

They had a quake massively bigger than the reactors were designed for.
    The rods dropped automatically.
They need a cooling water supply for around a week to get the heat out..
The quake took out the pumps. The sunami took out the backup.
The backup for the backup was also drowned.
The perfect storm happened and they are still keeping it tamed.

The death toll so far :- One worker died in a non-nuclear accident.

A few more days and it will all just be chip wrapper.

Actually, not really, I mean a quick google would put to rest most concerns.

Building it somewhere other than on the coast facing the prevailing
tsunami direction might have been a start point, the clue is in the word.

I mean, 'earthquake zone, coast, let's build it here', even I have long
thought this is dumb. Ok, yes, potentially you need a lot of water, but
on the east coast of Japan!

Heh. Most of our clients are too small to have the luxury of a
dedicated CGT bod, & they're investments rather than L&P, so do a lot
of portfolio modelling. They'd need an army of people calculating CGT
if they had to do that manually.
I did, on both counts. But I originally wrote it in 1997, so had to do
a fairly major re-write for taper.

Any other changes since then have mostly been to deal with the
amazingly fuckwitted ways in which people manage to **** up transaction
histories, especially when they take on a new client. E.g. they decide
they'll never need to report on transactions prior to 2009, so they
stick all old transactions on the system with a bargain date of
31/12/2008 then start whinging at us because the CGT calcs show
everything in the taper 'pool'. Well duh!

Other favourites are using dummy capital events to 'fix' incorrect book
costs then complaining because that capital event affects the CGT, &
the best of the lot, complaining that a disposal doesn't show as a
gain, when that disposal was actually the first transaction on the
portfolio. "Oh that should've been entered as December rather than
October, but I still don't see why your software can't calculate it".
Users - can't predict all the dumb things they'll do, can't kill 'em.

It is and it isn't. My brother trained as a journo after his astrophysics
degree, and spent a few years on scientific publications. People who can
write competently and have any kind of solid scientific background are
like rocking-horse-crap. However, they're not really in much demand,
either - he quite quickly moved out of science writing, towards financial
journalism, and is now in PR.

Scientific literacy is regarded, socially, as basically optional.
Oh, sure. But can you come up with any circumstance where it's anything
but a Really Not Very Good Thing to happen?

And which has been 'edited considerably' & 'corrected'. Aiui the
reactors themselves aren't the problem, it's the spent fuel rod storage
that's the worry. That's what they're trying to cool with the fire
    hoses & helicopters.

They should employ old people for the dangerous jobs like refilling the
    storage pond.
No problem if an octogenarian has an increased risk of developing cancer
    in twenty years....
