I hadn't realised how little people know about nuclear power generation
until I read most of the posts regarding the problems they're having in
Japan. Some of you must have trouble deciding which shoe goes on which
    foot in the morning.

  2. Of course we don't. Nothing but a bunch of iggerant oiks we are but
please feel free to educate us. As long as it does not conflict with the
constraints placed upon you by the Official Secrets Act.

You must, surely, be able to understand why the vast majority of the
population aren't quite up to speed on microsieverts/hour, and are a
little nervous of hearing the words "nuclear reactor", "partial meltdown"
and "explosion" in the same sentence?

Specialist Subject Syndrome init. Andy works with that sort of stuff
so is amazed everybody else doesn't know all about it, in the same way
I'm amazed when people don't know how to write some PL/SQL to
calculate the CGT S104 indexation amount for cash received from a
demerger on shares held in both the 1964 & 1982 pools.

Specialist subject syndrome is much better than pseudo science syndrome.
At least a specialist subject makes sense after you study it.

At least when I got to work with one gray shoe and one black one
it didn't contaminate the whole of the West Midlands.
Shouldn't these power stations be fail-safe, i.e. when all power is lost
the damper rods go in the right direction and the water doesn't all boil
    away?
Not that I know anything about power stations....

I admit to knowing close to SFA about it. That said, there's little I can do to
stop it going pop and **** all I can do should it pop.

I'm going to worry about other stuff.
Nope. I even managed my own tie this morning.

The control rods do go in the right direction.

The primary reaction has been stopped, the heat still being generated
(about 3% of full power) is from secondary reactions that'll take a few
    days to stop.

It wouldn't normally be that hard to cool the reactor after control rod
insertion, but as I understand it the hydrogen explosions have taken out
most of the auxilliary generators and pumps which is making it hard to
    keep coolant levels topped up.

Where "people" includes all the main media outlets, whose priority is
not to broadcast useful, accurate information (including _none_ if none
is available[1]), but to grab attention. Which is where the problem
    lies.

But someone can **** up the whole banking system by lending rednecks
$1m to buy a bunch of
    $10k trailers and that's ok.

The Japanese engineers have probably been a lot more accurate in their
decision making process than most people are in their day to day work
yet there seems to be an unlimited supply of people wanting to post
suggestions on how they should have done things.

I'd been mainly keeping quiet until I noticed people suggesting things
that have been in place on any power station using steam to generate
electricity for the last 50 years or more. Anyone would think we're
going back to the early '60s and the idea that we're facing some kind
of a nuclear holocaust and a 1,000 year winter.

  16. It is not the holocaust that is frightening, it is the constant accidental
drip, drip, drip of radioactive material into the water they make our beer
from and the lies and obfuscation of the truths regarding this that causes
    most to worry.

One would hope so given the potentical consequences, but they have
made a few fairly major ****-ups. Stopping the helicopters dropping
water & pulling everyone out the plant because the radiation was too
high, then realising they'd got their sums wrong & it wasn't that high
at all, could turn out to be one of the biggest mistakes in history.

Look what radiation did to the Incredible Hulk, Fantastic Four, Famous

From what I've read they're having to resort to using the fire system
to pump sea water as a coolant. Top quality bodge in my book.

They were using police water cannons at one point.

    Beat that.
