I need to get new tyres for a CB400T. I normally fit tyres at home - to my
Transalp and KLE500. The Honda has comstar wheels - are they any trickier to
fit tyres to than normal wheels?

I don't understand this, it's crap job at the best of times. Last tyre
I got was on the MT500. The mechanic emerged, sweaty and cursing after
replacing it, so even with full workshop facilities he'd had a bit of
    a game getting it off.

Best fitting I ever got. It's great getting an all-inclusive price up
    front :)

Doubt it. Though I'll never know 'cos I always GAMI !

Is this some form of hitherto unsuspected double narcissism?

Just the joy of google groups, where the window (within a window) you
type in slides up and down, so I don't see the second signoff.

    I don't use a .sig y'see ..

It's happened before, maybe it'll happen again. who knows :)

  6. I got kit to change tyres for convenience.

It takes 30-40 minutes to get to the nearest place I'd use that does
bike tyres. There's then a wait of (in most cases) at least an hour for
the job to be done. All in all it's half a day gone. I put the
tourances back on the XT in about an hour and a half last weekend
including messing around with cleaning wheels and calipers.

Suppose I'm really lucky, there are three places within 5 miles of here
that I'd trust to swop tyres, one of which will let me do my own on
their machine for a small reduction in price. Two of them will fit
tyres bought elsewhere for not a huge amount of money, but the other
one isn't so keen on that and charges a hefty premium if he doesn't
supply the tyres. All three offer a ride in - ride out service at
    reasonable cost.

It's simply not worth the time and effort replacing tyres myself at
home when I have these facilities at my disposal.

and disposal is another convenience for urban dwellers without a silage pit
    for the old tyres

Personally, I use Mike the indy BMW service bloke in Cardiff. Buying my
tyres from him, always at a good price, and getting him to fit them helps
keep him in business. Whilst he's changing the tyres he has the bike up on
a ramp and gives the bike the once over and is much more skilled than me in
spotting anything amiss. He put in 500ml of oil last time at no charge and
gave me a can of Wynn's Tyre Fix. On another occasion he noticed slight
play in the paralever bearing which he adjusted.

My local place is about a mile and half away, charges a tenner to swap
two tyres. They're also happy for me to bring in my own tyres, including
used ones (as I've done recently with the Trelleborgs/Trailwings and
    Maxxis in the past).

On top of that they don't mind me dropping the wheels out of the bike in
their workshop (well, just outside it) and have lent me tools previously.

Best of all they do them there and then. Support your local bike
    workshop!

  10. I do, for the jobs I don't want to do myself but for the sake of my
blood pressure(I hate waiting around for things) doing it myself works
    for me.

There is an outfit in Swindon I'd happily use, but that's about 40 miles
away. Nothing in Bath for tyres these days and Bristol only really have
Pro-tyre who I'd rather not use due to the fact they make me wait too
long. I guess if it was during the week it wouldn't be a problem,
unfortunately I only have Saturday for such things.

It's not as if it's that bad a job or that the equipment is that
    expensive these days anyway.

The reason I get them to do it is the time/convenience factor - if I had
to travel 40 miles I'd also do them myself.
