Hmm, Beemers are not really my cup of tea nowadays.

And that suits you - I decided I wanted something good at being 'mundane'
as, sooner or later, doing 100mph everywhere is going to end in trouble for
    the licence.

Your opinion (and on here it's certain) will vary!

Summat like that. But really, the power only comes on stupidly strong
at higher revs, and even then is quite predictable. If, for the sake
of argument, you were to limit yourslef to, say, 10k rpm, you'd
probably find the engine characteristics very similar to those of your
    14.

10k rpm? Surely it must be more exciting well before that, otherwise whats
the point? The 600 made the same power as Cab's 1400 (Yes not torque) from
    about 11k rpm.

I would have _hoped_ that a GSX-R thou would be rather exciting from a fair
bit lower than that.. what's the redline?

It is. I did a trackday at Mallory on my gixxer, and Alex was there
on his GSX-R750. Even tho I set myself a rev-limit of 10k, he still
reckoned the Thou leapt off down the straights in front of him.
    12k, I think.

Oh aye, there's plenty there all right. Perhaps a lower limit might
have been more appropriate, but it's only hypothetical anyway. The
point is that the engine is not scary, particularly if you don't use
    the last few thousand rpm.
I haven't compared, but I suspect the 1000 is probably higher than the
    1400 from tickover.
    12.5k, IIRC.

Well, not dice, as such. It was a sort of audition, so we could both
judge how fast he would be on the track (he'd only done one track day
    before).

As an add on to my OP. I found out today, that a p'ex of the GSX1400
would give me ¤5,400 (about £3,500).

Now I need to find out what the private sale value is. TOG, any rough
ideas on a grey ('cos apparently colour *does* matter, with grey
GSX14's being less popular) late 2002 model, with add-on's (as in
hugger and undertray) may be worth in the UK?

A Gixxer though goes for about ¤13,000 [1] (£8,5000) and the 750, about
¤9,500 (£6,200) (IIRC for the 750 price). Hmmm.

Mind you, I'll still need to do some looking around. This is just the
    first shop I've looked at.

[1] There's a waiting list at my local dealer for the 2005 model.
Apparently even Gixxer thous around a year or two old, are like rocking
    horse shit.

Fazer 1000? Seems a reasonable compromise between being able to go
fast, "chuck about", commute, travel long distances etc. Not sure how
popular they are in France. Cheap as chips here for previous year's
    models that remain unsold.

In the latest edition of Bike there is a brief snippet saying that the
full 2005 allocation of Triumph Speed Triples is sold out. If you fancy
one of those I'd imagine you'd need to move fast and be prepared to pay
    top money.

The TOG column in Bike also says that ZZR1200s are available as a decent
deal and are likely to keep their value.

Overpriced from what I've heard and not really good VFM. But I'll have
to see what last years models are priced like. AS it goes, Fazers are
very popular over here. The 600 is more popular than the 1000 and
    better priced and VFM, IMO.
Speed Triples. Hmm, worth a shot maybe. A few people have suggested
this. I think a trip up to the Avenue de la Grande Armee and Bastille
    is on the cards tomorrow.
Oh yes? I'll have to ask my mate to bring me a copy of bike over, next
    week.

Going from the GSX to the GSXR was like the difference between chalk and
cheese but I'm glad I did, to start with the power was quite daunting as
tiny throttle movement equate to brutal velocity changes but that's why I
went back to sprotbikes. Once I got used to "twisting with respect" the
gixer is a fantastic thing to ride. On the down side (as if it matters!) you
will lose the comfort but you gain in torque, bhp, grin factor and underkeg
    laundry bills.

Even with the full Akrapovic system on the GSX it in no way compares to the
power available on the gixer, however the power delivery is predictable and
the bike is a lot more planted, especially in the corners.

Oh, and the wheelies, don't forget the wheelies...

    *snort*

Took me less than 10 minutes longer. Max speed less than the ton,
mostly at around 60. In the car. With a bootful of ironmongery.

3 hours to Brighton in my van. Has absolutely no relevance to this at
    all.
