Changing spark plug problem

Hello - I've only been riding for just under a year and have never
before had any problems with my bike - so I don't have any experience
in bike maintenance. Anyway. I haven't used my bike for a few weeks
due to the cold weather and when I tried to use it this morning it
wouldn't start. I got it into my head that the spark plug might need
changing/cleaning. When I removed the rubber thing from the top of the
spark plug, I think I may have broke something as a little piece of
metal (kind of like a cup with a screw thread around the outside) and
a small white thing (looks a bit like chalk) with a spring attached
fell out. I'm not sure if they've snapped off or if they're supposed
to be able to fall out. If I put them back into the rubber thing than
I don't know what order thay go in.
I'd feel really stupid calling out a mechanic and I can't afford to
pay for one anyway. Can anyone offer any advice.

Sounds like you need a new spark plug cap. You can get NGK ones fairly
cheap and every bike dealer carries them in stock. If you haven't got a
clue what to do, then it would be best to get someone who knows what
they are doing to replace it for you. Watch and learn, one day you may
need to do it yourself at the roadside.

Plug caps aren't expensive and take about a minute to replace. A dealer
shouldn't really charge for fitting one if they sold it, unless they are
    complete bastards.

    What bike is it?

my own boxers for 30 seconds.

Congrats..even I managed to crash in my first week :)

Plug cap....no worries...grasp the wire that it went into, twist anti
    clockwise and unscrew it.
Go to a local bike shop with it in your hand and ask for a replacement
    (about £2.50-3.00) depending.

Grab the same wire and screw it back on (clockwise) fit it to the plug (push
    fit) and ride.

For future reference... make a note of the numbers on the spark plug.....eg.
    NGK B(size of thread) R(resistor fitted) 8(heat range) E(19mm
reach)S(standard tip) and replace it with the same or make sure it`s got the
    R(resistor) on the plug.
That means you don`t have to worry about the plug cap having a resistor
    fitted.

Indeed. The way I hear it, mystics are debating about the meaning if

My waist has overtaken my inside leg measurement by about 6 inches. When
I got married in 1990 they were the same at 28 inches.

11 stone. I was 9 stone until 18 months ago, then it just started to
kinda grow a bit. I blame my 40th birthday and Pip and Elly's marvellous
    cooking.

Excellent. That gives me an achievable target.

Now, all I have to do is maintain and wait for you to get a little
    fatter ;-)
