    Oooh nice, what colour?

When I was bringing the T/ace home last weekend, I was chatting at
Squires Cafe to a bloke from Harrogate who vaguely knows you. The
conversation was about 2004 R1s, and he mentioned he'd seen you out on
Acklams demo bike. He liked the look of it so arranged a test ride as
well. He reckoned their bike is restricted in some way, cos he couldn't
get it to rev above 7K, which I thought was very strange.

Have fun with the new toy :)

<G> It's a black and grey one mmmmmmmmmmmmmm.
Gotta run the sodding thing in tho, so we're taking a few trips out and
about this weekend to rack up a few miles. Paul has my old blue one for
    now.

I took it out a couple of days after it came into the shop (rude not to an'
all that) ANd of course I just had to take it down to Squires and have a
decent play. I told Paul (Acklams boss) that I'd bring it back in a couple
of hours ;o) Well, it was only just over when I took it back and we had
quite a bit of interest from the guys at Squires.

I wanted to test ride it back to back with mine to see exactly what had been
changed....its so diferent to mine! The riding position is narrower and
higher (not a major problem for me), it felt smoother and the power delivery
was faultless and revved smoothly all the way to the red line (yea yea thru
the shiftv change light which was indeed ignored on the demo bike). The
brakes are a lot sharper as discovered with the back end locking up
beautifully ) Managed to slide the back end of smoothly round at least
one corner and it felt stable and more than manageable when it was sliding.
Wheelies are harder than on my 99 model, but still comes up easily and as
with the '99, just as stable and smooth. Obvious power increase on the new
one and getting back on the '99 I felt it was lacking somewhat (hence Paul
geting the old one for the mo ;o))
Its not restricted, the shift changer light is set at 7k rpm where its
'suggested' you change up a gear.....trust me it revs freely all the
    way.....
    I will <VVGB>

Well, the bloke did appear to be a bi^H^H^lot of a wanker tbh, I can see
that it was the shift light and not a physical restriction. He was on a
2002 R1 in silver/grey wearing a black Nike puffa jacket, cargo pants
and trainers, kept wibbling on about how fast he was. He soon shut up
when I started looking at the squared off rear D208 with 1/2 inch
chicken strips. I think I said something along the lines of "My
housemate has a D207 on the rear of her CBR600, she reckons they grip
well all the way to the edges, maybe you'll find out how well the 208
grips one day". This got me a wry smirk from a couple of the blokes who
were hanging around the vicinity, matey finished his fag and fucked off.

Paul was saying they've had a few suspect characters take the demo bike out,
this guy may well have been one of those ;o)

You can slide around corners and pull wheelies!? Blimey, I can't slide
the back end around. Are you some sort of racer / talented rider?

Really? They teach you that sort of thing? I thought it was just safety
    focused stuff.

Anyone can pull a wheelie on the R1 ;op as you well know. The
'micro-climates' in the lanes were still a bit wet. But it never felt
unsure - slid out about 6" and slid the back end with the back brake a
couple of times to test the roads. The built in steering damper felt a bit
different to the damper on the '99 R1. It feels fantastic and just so sure
    footed.

I've never been a particlularly slow rider, but Pauls the more talented of
    the two of us.

Well Pauls the advanced observer, but I could never admit to the IAM
condoning my sort of behaviour - ahhh, that'll be why I'm not an observer
    then......

You've clearly never been part of Harrogate Advanced then...not that we
would ever do anything not condoned by the IAM, of course, no never, every,
    really.

I shall have to get some riding tips from you next time we're on a
ride-out together then. Now that I've got a helmet cam I could even
record your sliding and wheelies so that I can practice afterwards.
