I take the view that it's simply not worth the effort of fitting it
and keeping it topped up. I really don't think it's necessary. For
example, I lubed my chain, with chainsaw oil through an old-fashioned
pumped oil can, before my recent trip to Italy. Torrential rain and
dusty conditions were encountered over two thousand kilometres but the
chain was still nicely lubricated when I got back.

In 12000 km I've adjusted the chain once, just for practice when it
didn't really need it, and it was probably adjusted when new tyres
were fitted at 6k. It's due for a second new set of tyres, as well as
a service, about now but the chain still has no slack in it.

    So what's the point?

This is my view. I got over 20k miles out of the original chain on my
gixxer with just occasional lubing from an aerosol can.

Hmm. My memories not as good as it was (and it was crap), but I seem
to recall dwb getting the piss royally ripped out of him here for
talking about putting a scott oiler on his GSX-R 600.

    But I could be wrong.

I've even given up on aerosols since the last one ran out - I've got a
5-litre can of chainsaw oil anyway, for the, err, chainsaw, like, so I
just use that instead. Bit messy, but it's only a garage floor, right?

Of course, I used to always carry a can of lube round with me[1],
especially if I was on a trip, but since they've been making chains
out of something other than cheese even that doesn't really seem
    necessary any more.

Well, I don't have a chainsaw, and my garage is carpeted.
I'd still take a can on a long euro trip, probably, but that's all.

    Carpeted? You posh git.
Yeah, I guess I might - I did intend to get some on the Italy trip,
but every time I looked at the chain it was still looking well-lubed,
so I never got round to it. So 2000km is fine, but if I were planning
    more...

Seconded, I got 4k out of one before it snapped, I have abused other
makes of chain far more with less grief.

I didn't forget, see email, there are two neither of which I could find
at weekend. I confirm 1 decent side panel and front section, the other
    panel is kaput.
Oh I have one of those sir! with the 3/4 inch wrench it's not easy to
carry! I was actually toting an appropriate size adjustable spanner in
said pocket behind the seat panel. Such a beast has a myriad of uses.

I trust the steed is proving reliable?

I gotta say to Loz that using Castrol chain wax every 250 miles or so
that chain needed adjusted *slightly* twice in 6000 miles and several
track sessions. The scottoiler is a bit lost on it.

Proper race-prep workshop, is my garage.
Which reminds me - expect an email in the next couple of days about
meeting up in France next month.

  13. I think the difference between Loz and the pair of you is that he
isn't a pussy bitch and rides in winter.

It's the winter bit that makes the big difference, IMO. If I had a chain
driven bike (that isn't an MZ) that did the mileages the Guzzi does in
winter I'd definitely get a Scottoiler.

Others did, but not me. I took the piss royally for the utterly gash
installation that the supplying dealer did.
    Only to a point.

Cheers, as and when mate. There's no rush yet. I'll take the kaput
panel as well as I may be able to repair it with bits of old GPZ belly
pan welded in. I only need it for track days.
I'll pop down to the local car parts place on the bike and buy a 1/2
drive inch socket for when I'm working on it at home.
Nothing's gone wrong yet, and I've done about 2,000 pretty quick miles
so far. I'm very happy with it, but must get the rear shock sorted for
my weigh, it's way too stiffly sprung even with the preload backed
    right off.
