A 50:50 mix of gear oil and LM grease, applied with a brush[1] is even
    better still.

How do you know it's 1/4 full if you ignore it?

He might have noticed the 3/4 gap, rather than the 1/4 oil which he's
    ignoring?

Ahbut, to have noticed a 3/4 gap, then he must have noticed the rest
otherwise he couldn't properly calculate it.

  9. Chainsaw oil is half the price. Snot oil is pricey if you're doing a lot
    of miles.

Not quite. He's noticed the container as a whole, and then noticed that 3/4
of the container is empty, and then averted his eyes to avoid noticing
anything he's determined to ignore. Finally, he strokes his chin
contemplatively and muses, "My container is 1/4 full."

I never get this argument. I don't consider a £5 bottle of Scottoil per
8,000 miles or so pricey, not when compared to a set of two new tyres which
    you'll probably need by then.

Last lot of chainsaw oil I bought was IIRC £7 for a gallon. (£1.54/litre).
Works just as well as yer £5 for 1/2 litre stuff.

  16. Use chain saw oil in your Scottoiler, less fling.
Use chain saw oil with a brush or squirty can, less fling.

Important note to chain saw oil using Scottoiler owners.

The EC has declared that ordinary chain oil must be phased out and
    biodegradable chain oil used.
This puts the price up from £6 a gallon to £21 a gallon.
So get some cheap stuff now. Don't think you're being non PC, the amount
used on a bike is insignificant to the gallons used by your average
    chain saw using woodman.

  17. According to an old drinking friend who worked for Commer Oils, Scott
Oil is chain-saw oil with a colouring added and packaged in smaller
containers to as to be marketed at a higher price.

....and do you still have 3/4 of it lying around?! It's going to take around
70,000 miles to put that through a Scottoiler, at the end of which you would
have saved 36 quid over 70,000 miles. Taking the bike to the jetwash only
once every 10,000 miles could cost you more than that, so I don't see what
    the big deal is.

Actually, on reflection, I think it's just the fact that it's easier for me
to remember to pick up a bottle of Scottoil than to actually bother to find
somewhere that sells chainsaw oil! Laziness wins again :)

You're 'aving a larf, aintcha? Sick squid a gallon is a joke in the
first place - I'm sure it's only about half that round here. I'm
equally sure that the French would ignore any such ruling, and quite
    rightly so.
