Yeah I know it's a real basic question but then I have a real basic
    knowledge of bikes:

A bike mechanic told me that engine oil is one of the best lubri-cunts
(sorry, it's the school boy in me:) for chains because it penetrates deep
(oh err missus) so I have be using a 1" paint brush to apply synthetic oil
on the chain and it seems to work well and is less messy and cheaper than
these spray chain lubes, so the question is; any see any short or long term
    problems with this?

Nah, that's fine. Engine oil can fling a bit so in the winter I spray
some of that wax stuff on top.

Otherwise I use anything in the garage that feels gloopy.

    1. Get a Scottoiler
    2. Ignore it for the next 1000 miles.
    3. Refill.
    4. See 2.

The man is a ****, use proper chain oil.

Better still get a proper bike, one with a shaft drive.

....and not notice that your chain is slack / knackered.

Yebbut all the snotoiler fans keep saying that chains don't wear or go
slack if you use snotoil. Have they been telling porkies?

Happened to me in the winter a few years back. Bike had a split link
(GPZ600), the Scot oil thing had got fucked up and stopped delivering
oil. Oblivious to this I kept on... the salt spray siezed the chain
up... and eventually the split link retainer thing popped off.

Not a nice thing to find. Still I'm alive. Bastards.

And not mind getting yourself and your bike covered in shit.

    My attitude is more like:

    1. Spray it with chain lube.
    2. Ignore it for the next 1000 miles.

Not much different really, is it?

Why would you keep it in the garage?

Thanking you for your most gracious input reverend, however, wouldn't you
agree tis better to be a little less extravagant with the oil and pass this
    saving to a worthy charity?
Maybe a 900 divvy then? but didn't you tell me last month that I made a good
decision choosing a bandit over a 900 divvy?

You can be so fickle at times :))))))

This is why you use the chain oil All it needs is a couple of drips
every however often you do it and you will do it less often.

Not at all. I am just keeping Champs happy by reminding him of the
standing reply to any thread based upon chain lubrication. When you
have been here a while you will understand.

    With Touring Reservoir ...
Ignore it (and chain adjustment) for 8,000 miles so far ...
    It's still 1/4 full
    5. Check chain looks black/shinyoily when nipping out for a fag.
Which it does - clean, too.
