Chain Lubrication

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Vegetable Grower, May 31, 2006.

  1. Does anyone have any thoughts about a good chain lubricant/oil? 4000
miles between services seems a bit too long when I'm doing 100 miles/day
commute. M&P seem to have a wide selection but I haven't a clue where to
    start...

Hmm, I recently used Castrol Chain Wax and found it to be very easy to use,
and so far, the (I believe) OEM chain on my Zephyr looks like it still has a
lot of life left in it.

Others here have reported that Chain Wax is the sputum of satan, and
wouldn't touch it with yours, let alone a barge pole. The can I used
purported to be "new formula", so perhaps it was crap, but is now okay.

Anyway, my 2d's worth, IIWY I'd fit a Scottoiler.

You weren't seriously considering 4k miles without lubing the chain,
were you? You'd be looking at twice a week on a warm chain (when you
get home rather than before you set off) with a decent quality aerosol
lube. Silkolene or PJ-1 spring to mind, but I'd stay away from chain
    wax by preference.

For the ultimate in fit-and-forget, a Scottoiler with a touring
    reservoir is the only answer.

  6. I now use Putoline O-ring chain lube. I've tried many others including
chain wax (which I hate), PJ-1 etc and now believe that the Putoline is
among the best. It *does* fling off a bit but that's because it's oil but
it does the job very well. I normally clean the chain with a WD-40 soaked
rag to get all the shit off then give a dose of Putoline. I normally lube,
drive a few miles then clean the back wheel with WD-40. After the initial
fling-off period it seems to stick fine but unlike other lubes, the chain
retains that nice wet lubed look.

    Um, or get a Scottoiler.

I've used it and it seems OK, though nowadays I tend to use oil or a
    shaft drive.

I still use chain wax for winterising alloy wheels and generally
spraying onto unpainted metal like spindle nuts, adjusters and so on.

Bloody pads keep rubbing it off the discs, mind.

    I concur with Putoline.
I use the same stuff and only lube when the rings look shiney!
They should look dull if lubed ok. Works out at about 500 miles i re
    lube depending on weather etc.
