    Hi all,

The chain circlip keeps falling off my XT600.

Does anybody know how to keep it on ?

I might fall off one of these days if this keeps happening.

    cheers.

    GB.

Is it installed the correct way round? (The round end pointing in the
direction of rotation). Either way it would be a good idea to replace it if
it is indeed coming off so easily.

  3. Is it bent or twisted? how many times have you reused it?

Best bet really is to get a new one and make the problem go away..[/QUOTE]

There is of course another, *much* better solution that solves the
problem completely and for ever ;-)

Replace the whole split link (clip groove may be defect or something
else might be wrong with it, clips don't just get lost). Get a split link
for the exact type and make of chain you have.

Always slide clip into position, never, ever, twist it or lift it over the
    pin.

Clip should sit real snug against the link side plate, if it does not
you have to knock the side plate further out.

74 000 km on my XT and never a split link problem.

Soft link for the chain. Fit it correctly and it will last as long as
the chain does. Far better than other, power sapping, ideas

  9. Power sapping? You didn't inwardly digest the thread a year or so ago,
    did you :)

D I Y shaft drive on a XT600 ? OK, go ahead and build one and many
of us will probably be quite impressed. Preferably it should be a fancy
double jointed, no torque reaction one.

And, besides, at least BMW shaft drives are not really "for ever", not
much is, really, possibly diamonds like in the song. And even if the
maintenance effort is minimal, it is critical that it is done or you (or a
later owner) get severe wallet pain sooner than expected.

  11. Ever totted up the running costs of a chain against a shaft? Chain
    loses big money hands down.

Your version of "big money" obviously varies from mine, Dave.

that's what I was thinking - even if I had to buy a new chain and
sprockets every year or something for all my bikes (which obviously, I
don't) then it still wouldn't come even remotely close to "big money".

I know this isn't part of Dave's priorities, but if you want a 150bhp
sportsbike, you're not going to find one with a shaft-drive.

Doubt it. Trying to remember - I think I got through three chains in
25000 miles on the Triumph (by not lubing and adjusting correctly) but
the original sprockets were still fine.

The gixxer one has needed adjusting twice in 6000 miles.

Doesn't sound like high running costs to me.

playing devil's advocate for a moment, doesn't the new K1200RS make
that sort of horsepower? Of course, the obvious question is whether
you count it as a "sportsbike", but I'd say that is what BMW is
    attempting to market it as...

    Shafts sap power though...

Not nowadays. The original chain on my GSX-R 1000 has just come to
the end of it's life at 25,000 miles. Being a modern limp-wristed
southern shandy-drinking fair weather sausage jockey, that's three
years of riding for me - hardly a big expense, or inconvenience.

....compared to a chain in tip-top condition. Say a chain is 95% efficient,
and a shaft is 90%. The shaft goes on being 90% for year after year, while
the chain gets filthy dirty and more rude, and less efficient as it wears
out. Of course there are remedies for this: snotoilers, enclosed chaincases
etc, although these may somewhat impair the glamour of a 150bhp sportsbike.
