As someone else points out, mechanisms for this have been suggested.
I'm a bit dubious about those that purpoty to do it with a (EM-inert)
twig, but give me a couple of bits of bent metal and I'll find the
drains in your garden, street or whatever.

I'm quite a fan of Dawkin and Pinker, and I largely agree with what
they say. I had an excellent write up of a dialogue from a confrence
where they were on the panel, very interesting and entertaining. I must
see if I can find that again.

Some of what Dennet writes is interesting, I'm not advocating his
standpoint on, well, anything that springs to mind - but it's certainly
interesting to contrast with other writers.

 

The twig or whatever is reacting to small movement in your own muscles not a
conducted or inducted effect in the rod. Apparently.

 

You get some dowsing rods and do it. Some blokes can and most can't but
not by a big most as mosts go. You might notice that there are more
successful dowsers that are men than there are successful and honest
wimmin doing it. This is because only blokes can do it because only we
can feel the little tightening of the skin at the bottom your nuts that
is the sign you are over the water underground. This nut skin
tightening is what does the involuntary movements in your hands which in
itself is what makes the dowsing rods "react". A bit like that feeling
you get in them when she says she is going to cut them off and she means
it but a lot, lot more subtle. Ancient tribal instinct it is, the fear
of water without hops and barley in it innit.

 

The only charlatans in the dowsing business are wimmin. There is about
a 1 in 4 chance of a bloke being a total fraud though and even some of
them don't actually realise they are not.

snot magic. Not unless knowing what a bike under you feels like just
before it s going to slide and just getting on with the business of
adjusting so it doesn't happen without even thinking about it. Once it
has been explained and you get to practice it a bit you just get on with
it and dowsing is all about recognising the signals you are getting and
applying feedback and not falling off.
