CG125 speedo

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Peter Windridge, Jan 4, 2005.

  1. Dear all

went out on the cg125 (does sign) after she'd been in shed for nearly 2
weeks only to get half a mile or so and realise the speedo wasn't
working. It was definitely working on the last outing (bike test :))
but now nothing. Throughout the ride, the speedo would occasionally
flick up but otherwise apparently nothing. Taking off the cable and
spinning the wheel reveals that the cable is not being turned (as
opposed to a the unit in the dash being faulty).
Taking off the wheel and turning the worm wheel and 'cog'[1] that turns
it reveals everything is fine that point onward.

I've done the obvious like greased drive worm wheel in wheel, oiled the
cable and checked the alignment of the hub notches to those on the
'cog'[1] but has made no difference.

To my untrained eye it seems possible that the notches on the 'cog'[1]
which are driven by those in the hub are worn, as spinning the wheel in
the opposite direction results in the cable turning ok.

If anyone has any tips or help to offer I'd be very grateful. Also, is
it a legal requirement to have a working speedo? I know what 30mph,
40mph are roughly on my bike (accurately enough to no get gatso'ed, I
think) but I can't remember it ever being mentioned at MOT.

    thanks, Peter

[1] I dont know the proper name for this.

The cable's probably broken right at the bottom, and when you turn the
wheel round the other way the broken ends just mate up enough. Have you
actually removed the cable inner to check?
    Yes, indeed.

Sounds obvious but did you actually pull the inner cable out to check if
    it`s snapped half way down?
Don`t grease/oil the top couple of inches of a speedo cable where it enters
the clock, the grease can work it`s way into the speedo and damage it.

  5. I haven't removed it and will take a look. When I turn the cog that
drives the worm wheel (in the right direction) the cable turns though..
I suppose its possible though that it works without the hub in with a
    broken cable.

    Thanks for your help Tog,
    Peter

You can use a bicycle speedometer. Electronic digital type. Available
Do bicycle speedos go up to 35mph then?

They'll go up to 99mph and have handy trip, average and maximum functions.

    sweller says...
My BC700 goes to 200mph apparently, not that it's ever been close to
    that on a CB250RS.

    The Sigma BC600 and BC800 go up to 186mph / 300 km/hr.
