Ceased Head stem nut

Discussion in 'Motorbike Technical Discussion' started by R & J Langdon, Jul 2, 2006.

  1. I have a ceased head stem nut ( I am turning the bike trying to undo it ). I
have sprayed it with RP7, and left it for a while and no there is no
change. One of the blokes at work suggested "Yule". I am not sure of the
spelling of yule. Does anyone know the correct spelling and Who makes it, or
does anyone have any other ideas? Heat would be my last option.

    Thanks in advance

  2. I don't know from "Yule" but I suspect that you intend to say that the nut is
    "seized."
    Yep.

Despite all the fun the grammer correctors here are having... there are
    answers to your problem...

To start you need to evaluate what's more important to you.

If you want to do it yourself so much (for whatever reason) that you are
willing to end up buying some new parts if it all goes badly... (and getting
something like this off with little experience of doing this kind of thing
gives plenty of oppertunity of it going badly).

Or are you willing to drag it down to a machine shop, where people deal with
this kind of problem daily and will more than likely save you money by
getting the nut off without damaging the threads.. (or send you away knowing
that you need to buy the parts anyways...)

If you want to do it youself despite the risks, use heat/cool cycles, and
your penetrant of choice to work it in without mechanically moving the part
too much (4or5 degrees at max). A heatgun is best, but can be done with a
propane torch... don't overheat the parts or you put yourself in future
    danger.

I've done this kind of thing quite a bit, but would still go to a pro if I
didn't have the right tools handy.

Check price and availability for the nut as a spare part.
If the answers are not too discouraging, just file and hack
    the unwilling fucker to pieces.

  6. No. File and hack the unwilling fucker ***almost*** to pieces,
then carefully split it. You don't want to take a file or hacksaw
or splitting tool all the way down to the threads or you'll destroy
it. A mototool and/or grinder might work better anyway.

I'd also give it another shot first using heat and Kroil penetrant.
Heat in case there was loctite used. Kroil because I've always
had good luck with it as a penetrating oil.

On a head stem, I'd suspect loctite and lots of torque before
    I suspected seizing.
