CD security etc

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Doesnotcompute, Apr 17, 2005.

  1. okay, so I just bought a CD (Moby - Hotel) that appears to have some
sort of security on it. IT seems I can't play it on my laptop unless I
install the software on the CD.

On principle, I don't want to use their software - anyone know the
easiest way round this (apart from downloading the album as .mp3)

Or, if you're not using linux I've found the following works just fine:
1 Holding down the shift key when inserting the CD to stop it
    autorunning anything.

2 Use iTunes (other programs may work too, but I've stuck with itunes as
it's not yet failed me) and rip it to MP3.

Does the "hold down the Shift key while inserting the CD" thing still work?

OTOH, you might need something that tells Window to look at a particular
session on the CD - a google should turn up something.

    OTOOH: Linux?

  9. Y'see this is what really pisses me off. I've bought a CD, I should be
able to play it anywhere/how I damn well please.

so that'd be me travelling with 2 laptops and MP3 player AND a CD
    player. Perhaps not. Thanks tho!

So you saying Win Media Player baulked at some embedded licensing crap
but winamp does not? or was it just a format challenge.

No. You're obviously a criminal who wants to upload the CD to the Big
Bad Internet to deprive the artist of the 5% share in the revenue that
the record company graceously allows him as you wouldn't otherwise be
    bothered about the copy protecting.

    It's for your own safety.
It probably won't work on the ikkle little player either...

Yeah, naughty bastards. If people carry on like this, it'll be the end
of music. It just won't be financially viable anymore, people will stop
    making it.

It won't be something he's impressed by, he's been quoted online as
    saying:

"if i release a cd and it has copy-protection on it, it's not by my
choice. copy-protection annoys the s--- out of me, cos it prevents me
from putting my own cd's into i-tunes. just thought i'd let you know.

So how does it do that then? I've only ever used to make an image (which it
does rather spiffingly) but I'd have thought that the image (being an image
and all) would include any copy protection.....
