I have an '81 KZ750 with a windjammer and bags that I would like to install
    a radio in.
I am not happy with the removable sort and I would like to install it in the
    windjammer fairing.
Has anyone done something like this?
I am guessing that at the very least I would need some sort of vibration
damping tray to install the radio in.
I am also going to need fairly small speakers, but they need to put out good
    quality sound as well.
Anyone have any thoughts that would improve my design?
    Thanks, Matt

You need a prefabricated radio housing that was designed to be an
exact fit into a Windjammer fairing, the brand name was 'Cycle
Sound'. I had one in my CB900C's Vetter Windjammer V fairing that
I immediately sold (including a crappy AM/FM/cassette unit) for
$25. I found out that they were getting a >bit< rare in good
condition, and I could have gotten more than that...

The Cycle Sound unit is an exact fit, and will bolt right into the
Vetter Windjammer. You won't be able to make a better fitting
unit yourself without a lot of work. Check out ebay, here's one
unit, although this one looks like it's been run over by a truck.

At the bottom of this page there's a picture of how it fits into
    the Windjammer:

Once you find a CD player that can handle the jostling and vibrations and
play without skipping, please share the brand name with us. Last one I had
couldn't play if I went faster than 70 MPH.

Once you find a CD player that can handle the jostling and vibrations and
I have a Panasonic CD player on my 1200 Bandit and it is fine. It is
installed under the seat in the tool well. I placed a cut piece of foam into
the well, placed the player on top of that and connected it all through my
autocom intercom with the phone and the sat nav all powered from the bike
battery.. The player skips occasionally but is fine at any speed.

Even with earplugs I do not find that it affects my judgements or senses
when riding. Everything is hands free - if the phone rings, the system mutes
the music and answers automatically. When the call has finished the phone
cuts off and the music starts again. The sat nav gives me voice prompts and
again is an aid rather than a problem.

Why not look at an MP3 player? There isn't the same problem that there is
with a CD player that I'm aware of. Of course you're going to have to fill
it yourself. But size shouldn't be an issue nowdays anyway and you
shoudln't have much problem mounting it.
