Any pointers when buying? Anything special to look out for? TIA
Quiet engine, first and foremost. A really good CBX can be tuned to tick over with the tacho needle on the stop! So at about 300-400 rpm.... The CBX has the same cam drive assembly as the 750 and 900 -chain drive to the inlet cam, and a second chain linking the two cams together. Valve gear and shims are all straight CB900 too. Thus any top end noice is, as with the 900, cause for deepest suspicion, though for some reason the CBX is far less afflicted than the fours. Swinging arm bushes are nylon on the twin shockers, and die early. Needle roller conversions exist (I had a couple of dozen but I've sold them all now). Seats and other trim bits are hard to get - the alloy strips of trim on the seats are utterly unobtainable. OE exhausts for preference. Jama do a decent six-into-two pattern, though. Brakes - marginal when new. Any form of upgrade is a Good Thing and sod originality. I'd expect steel hoses at the very least. I'd check the owner as much as the bike. You really want to know you're buying from a CBX freak. I'd ask about carb balancing - if they're even slightly out, it chunters, and not everyone has a set of six vacuum gauges. If your seller possesses such, you're onto a winner.

Silver A model. Fully sorted by A&H (CBX specialists) new shocks, pipes, tyres, rebuilt brakes. All less than 200 miles ago. Asking four thousand. Blimey.

Somebody stop me. It's all original, except for the pipes and shocks, unsurprisingly. Engine sounds lovely, just a gentle rustle on tickover when warm. Cosmetics are a little tired, but then it is 26 years old. Paint in good order, engine could do with a tidy up, externally. Aren't they quiet, though? It's comfy, Linda fits on the back. Mot'd and taxed today. Auntie Carole wants £29 to insure it to the end of November. Matey wants iro £4k.

Be more specific, man! TOG wouldn't like him - he suggested I transfer funds into his bank account. A&H gave it a clean bill of health, it ticks over at 500rpm, it's shiny, and I wants it. Half a dozen MOTs, all bills, manual, etc. New tyres. I'm not thrilled at the state of the aluminium paint on the motor, but it's no biggie. Small frame components will come up a treat with Smoothrite. All I need now is for the cheque for the KH500 to arrive. <eyes CC cheque on top of PC> No, I mustn't. Go on, it'll only cost £15. Aaargh! <Picks up 'phone>
Offer 3.5k.[/QUOTE] I have - on his answerphone. You won't get OE pipes for love nor money - they're all on full restos. £6k and up for those. Also considering a red one, but that's sporting a 6 into 1. Nicer, but more expensive; the bloke will not shift on price, and can't see it till his brother comes back from holiday with the garage keys.

On Wed, 6 Jul 2005 20:12:23 +0100, I have a source for an OE set, needs welding and re-chroming - £350. Might be worth a long term punt, that might. Possibly. Probably seem more attractive after some alcohol.
