M'boy's dodgy mate has just turned 16 and is taking his CBT so he can ride
his TS50. Does he also need to do the theory test?
He reckons no, but I am not too sure, as it makes no sense to allow someone
to ride a motorcycle (well, almost) on the road having only demonstrated
that they can ride around the cones, but had no requirement to demonstrate
that they at least have some appreciation of the highway code.

As m'boy will be 16 in Nov, and fancies getting a 'ped I am curious, anyone
    know the definitive answer?

    I think he's right.

SWMBO is just finishing her training to ride ,and she had to have the
Theory/Hazard test before she started at Riders Edge. But according to them,
and we all though it fecking daft, you don't have to pass the theory/hazard
until you are ready to take the main test.

I'd still like to know for definite though.

I can understand not having to do the heory until you take a car test, as
you have to have a full licence holding passenger when out on the road, but
on a bike you are on your own.
It makes no sense to me.

AFAIK the theory test is not part of the cbt.

Correct, he doesn't. CBT gets you on the road. You have to pass the
theory test before you can do your test.

I'm pretty sure you don't have to do the Theory until you want to take
    your proper test.

However, I seem to recall them doing some sort of briefing followed by
a theory type test for the 16 year olds when I did my CBT - I went off
to get some grub since the instructor didn't think it was necessary
for me after I answered a couple of his questions correctly (I had a
shiny 100% Theory Test Pass Certificate and a 7 year-old car licence).

  10. You definately do not have to take a theory test when taking your CBT.

The theory test is done in conjuction with the full bike test, which he
could do if he didn't want L plates. He can't do that until 17 though.
