Here's an interesting thing, and a word of caution for F Sport owners
who do their own maintenance. The books all have the chain length
wrong. The chain is the same length as the preceding models FX and FY
in that it is 108 links. All the books say 112 links - and that is
what the shop will supply you with, in good faith.

Then, when you get the new chain on and the soft link peened over
beautifully - and locate the wheel with the new chain over the new
sprockets - you find the chain sags all over the fucking shop. Four
extra links make a hell of a difference, you know.

Anyway, thanks to Loz and his dubious talents with an angle grinder
(I'm too full of codeine to walk straight) the chain is now off again
and cut to _the right length_ and a new soft link will be obtained.

    Arse.

Why can't you just stick to the Whacky Baccy like the rest o' the world?

Question to you/Loz. How did you peen the soft link over? I have a Gixxer
with it's chain off and no longer own the pukka tool. I have been waking up
with thoughts of putting the bike against the house wall, removing the rear
wheel and using No.1 Cairnshill as an anvil.

Pip has a small bench vice that we drag out and place under the bike. I
whip the back wheel out so there's plenty of slack in the chain and hold
the back of the soft link against the front face of the vice. I then use
a small ball-pein hammer to pein the ends of the pins over once the side
plate has been squeezed on using the vice and two small sockets. It's
all really quite simple and quick.

    Wot 'e said.

Having just done it for the second time in 24 hours I can tell you
that it is a little fiddly and does take some grunt, but is pretty
fuckwit-resistant and takes about 15 minutes.

Ah so my nightmare featuring a mole wrench and a house were not far out.
I'm slightly shocked to find out how much the proper tool is now. Anyone
care to recommend a particular make/break tool which will handle all sizes
    and O/X ring types?

Angle grinder - 15 quid for a cheapie
Ball pein hammer - 5 quid for a 10 oz one from a cheapo tool stall on
    market.
Parallel punches - 10 quid for a pack of 3 cheapies on the market.
Old vice - 5 quid on ebay

Wtf do you need a special tool that will probably break at some point?
You're looking at the thick end of 80 quid for a proper DID one, and
then you need adaptors on top of that for different size and makes of
chain, because alot of them rivet in differing ways. Some have a little
depression in the end of the pins that you burr over, others need quad
staking with the correct tool. Even the DID ones can break when tackling
    530 or 532 chain.

    <cough>
    it's another toy is all
Obviously for this current challenge the portable vice route will have to
    suffice.

I knew there was something I liked about Beemers....
