Not proper linked brakes, though, with 14 hoses and six master
    cylinders, are they?

  6. A mate had one of these and had a similar problem that eventually
resulted in 3rd gear and nothing else.

He removed the engine and brought it to me.
I stripped the gearbox, examined everything and could find nothing
    wrong.
He came back, paid the bill and took the lump away.
I got a phonecall the next day saying that when he was putting in back
together, he found the gear shift lever and linkages to be seized up,
and now he had freed them off the gearbox worked fine. An expensive
lesson, bit one that needed to be learnt.
I did the same with a Citroen BX slipping clutch. I changed the clutch
only to find the problem was in the linkage all along.

So, have a look at the gear change lever pivot and linkages, you may
find the shift is easier with a bit of fettling there.

Yes... has various stickers / pipework / tendencies to bring on the brakes
at both end, whichever lever you prod / squeeze, which suggest this is the
    case...
Like I say, having actually now ridden something kitted up with it for a
while, I can't see what all the derogatory fuss is about - in slow moving
traffic especially, it's a plus, not a minus, (IM limited E)

    JackH says...
Just wait until that desperate moment when you only want to drag the
rear brake to bring the bike onto a tighter line through a corner that
is sharper than you thought. You'll be fucked then.

Linked brakes, I fucking hate them.

Hmm, well it doesn't seem overly stiff... was just an observation that it's
'typical Honda', in my experience of various 90s fours they've churned out.

    However...
....all noted, and will give it a bit of TLC in this respect, when I give it
a bit more fettling later in the week.

How difficult is it to balance the carbs / do the valve clearances on these?

I've never been that confident in getting that involved with them; the one
time I bothered to buy some vacuum gauges, it all seemed a bit complex, so
paid someone else to do it... which I may do this time as well if you fancy
having a go, and presuming the local bike shop will quote enough to bring on
    a coronary, to do it.

The day I have to do that, has yet to happen tbh, at least since the advent
of me having a full licence, and 'proper bikes'.

Maybe you ride more 'on the edge' than me, and I mean that in nice way...
    you mad ****.

"Slow in, fast out... fast in, shit out" ;-)

My main bugbear, is spotting gravel etc., mid corner, right on my line.
Tend to allow the bike to drift slightly off the intended line, rather than
'risk' it sliding from under me.

Point is, last time one did that, it was a H100... something with **** all
contact patch, or weight to keep it adhered to said contact patch.

A mental block I need to get over, anyway... and owning a barge seems to be
helping on this one - gets much less upset by stones / bumps etc., when I'm
decking it over for a bend.
Each to their own... I'm currently in the 'for' camp.

Not in my experience and the Guzzi is a lot more brutal in it's linked
brakes with a suspension a lot less sophisticated.

But surely you would never need to resort to comfort dabs on the back
anchor, with all that engine braking?

Aye, it's not like this thing just bangs both sets on, with a 50/50 split,
    is it...
