As a haggling point at what mileage should it be renewed and what would a
proper mender charge for doing it ?
    TIA

  2. If the tensioner has never nadgered, it should last for at least 50,000
    miles, and probably much longer.

A dealer would probably charge about ukp150 for a soft link replacement.

If you're looking at one and it's rattling, it's the tensioner, not the
camchain, that's fucked, and that's only a 50 quid job.

CBR600 CCT's are notoriously bad. If it has failed at an unreasonably
low milage then you may be able to get your dealer to replace it FOC,
even if the warrantee is out. I have heard of them going at only 2000
miles, and then the replacement lasts a few thousand miles more!

IIRC the part is about 50ukp, and a dealer will quote 2 hours labour.
Having looked in the Haynes manual for the FX model and later I can
    well believe it.

I'm still on the original cam-chain and tensioner at 68,000 miles. As
others have posted it's usually the tensioner that packs up. You can
    replace it with a manual one;

I've had two out of five CBR6's start to rattle after 10,000 miles and
if you don't get the tensioner replaced immediately, then the camchain
may well need to be replaced too. I've always had the work done within
warranty, but even if your one is out of warranty a decent dealer should
    argue your case with Honda.

You've not stated which model year the bike is and IIRC, early ones had
the camchain in the middle of the block and then later ones it moved to
one side, so that, presumably, you wouldn't need to split the engine to
    change it.

Fuel pumps tend to go at 20-25K. Check the suspension, because on early
ones I was told that the rear shock isn't rebuildable.

Thanks Gents, I'll be looking at mid-nineties models in the new year. Most
of the ones advertised are about 30K miles or less. I just wanted an extra
    haggling point.
    Thanks again
