Que? An MoT for bikes only used during daylight hours (which I think is
the wording in the manual) has always been called a 'daylight MoT'
afaik. Or have I been whooshed?

Is it actually a different bit of paper?

Yes & no - same cert, but with an additional bit of paper (advisory
    notice).

  5. Same retroactive regs affected right old shite cars - that's why you see
so many of them with stoplights on a chrome bracket above the rear
bumper. Prior to some date (poss in the 20s) they didn't need one at
all, then one either centrally or on the offside (30s?), then they
    needed a pair (50s?).
    Ditto.

It's not a legal requirement - merely a common sense mod. Same with
    flashing indicators.

The advisory notice for my CBR600 trackbike says "All lights and lamps
missing or permanently disconnected. ONLY USE IN DAYLIGHT HOURS AND DO
NOT USE AT TIMES OF SERIOUSLY REDUCED VISIBILITY"

So you have no lights but you still have a reflector for the MOT.
    Is that how it works?

You don't need a reflector if you haven't got lights.

The bit that pissed me off about all this is that you can't *just* have
a brake light. I'm quite happy riding around on a bike with no lights,
but I would prefer to have a brake light rather than having to flap an
arm up & down, which is probably a meaningless gesture to most drivers
    these days.

It's lead to a few hairy moments when trailriding, as you sometimes
have to slow to a stop on fast 'A' roads with no turnings, in order to
disappear through the hedge onto a tiny track. If there's a car up your
arse at the time, they obviously don't expect you to slow down & stop
in the middle of the road, so having a brake light to flick at them
    would be very useful.

  10. Ah, ok.
****'s sake - by then every maker with any sense had been fitting them
in pairs for absolutely years, and bugger if it was legally needed or
not. I presume the legal requirement for a pair didn't happen until
    about 1965, then.

  11. Indeed. Besides, I wouldn't mind betting the MOT is required to state that
lamps are not fitted and that the vehicle is only legal for use in daytime,
    in some way or other.

  12. I don't see why you shouldn't, and in fact I'm not sure on newer stuff that
it's legal not to have a brake light.

  13. Routemasters only had the one, in the middle.

Doesn't matter how new it is, it'll fail an MOT if it's just got a
brake light. Stupid as it sounds, you've either got to have all the
    lights or none at all.

No reflector. It's very cleary stated in the MOT testers manual that
you cannot have a reflector if you have no lights
