Someone's just offered me a nice condition Honda CB250RS with a blown
engine and I'd like to put it back on the road. Has anyone got or know
of a spare engine that runs please? Must be cheap or preferably free.

Paging Entwisi. You don't want to get shot of the ukrm slut-bike do you?

ISTR that an XBR engine can be made to fit. So, probably an XR or a
    Dominator also...

Would be nice, but I think they are even more difficult to find.

Even rarer than RS engines. I'd have to convert to 12V too, but I have
the old engine to nick the bits from. I was looking at an XL500S I found
being broken on the net last night. I've emailed the breaker for a price
    on the engine/carb/ignition box.

I've ridden one that a mate built, it was immense fun. The XL500S engine
drops straight in the frame, just requiring new head steadies to be
fabricated out of 6mm steel plate as the barrel is taller, and about
35mm needs adding to the downpipes for the same reason. Obviously you
have to use the XL's igniter box, but that plugs straight into the CB
loom. Everything else is wonderfully compatible and straight forward.

I rode an FT500 back to back with the CB500RS, and the RS was the far
better bike. It made us wonder at the time why Honda didn't build them
like that in the first place, instead of making the abortion that was
    the FT.

  11. I never understood that either. Then they made the XBR500, and I forgave
them, because that was a wonderful bike.

I do rather regret parting with Onebus sometimes, a fine little bike
    that was.

  13. Yebbut, it was such an obvious progression it must've occurred to them.
If they could (and did) create an entirely new bike wivva 500 lump they
already had they could extract more cash from buyers than simply bunging
said lump into the 250 frame.

The FT was a pile of shite, no doubt about that, but the basic engine
was ok. The wierd starter was the weak point on that - I've never seen a
crash engagement starter on a bike engine before. Maybe it was supposed
to be pre-engaged, but it ended up crashed.

  14. Kickstart-only, which ruled it out for me.

There was something very right looking about the SRX. After riding one I
realised it was mostly about looks!

  18. mind, unless it was a race-prepped one, it ought to have idled... the
getting into neutral thing seems to happen to quite a few bikes (mind, some
of the old ones had a special neutral-finder pedal) - certainly happens on
the SOBoxer especially if I've been "making progress" and got it hot.

No Japanese bike I've ever owned has this problem. Even race tuned ones
have idled nicely, and the gearboxes are fine hot or cold.

  20. I didn't say race-tuned, I said race-prepped. May not apply any more, but
traditionally the engine is set up to cut out if you let go the throttle.
