It ain't so bad at all for a 'road' bike. My bloody KX had a piston life
measured in single digits of *hours*. At one point I had a thrice-weekly ad
in the motox spares section of Tradeit for pistons/barrels, even whole KXs
    to keep the bastard running.
What's a standard NS400 like as 'weekend toy' from a maintenance point of
view? Do they put up with a couple of 100-200mile round trips per month, or
are they just really a 'Friday night at the pub' tool?

You can go off people you know ;-)

This is exactly what I've done. Well apart from the actual riding of my
    'dream' bike from age 13.

    Disposable income. It's a curse.

    Cheers

I've obviously missed some news or summat then. Who's had a sprog? (Had as
in given birth. Not 'had' in a Gary Glitter way, natch)

Well obviously I'm biased, but as long as the gearbox is sturdy then they're
    fine.

A good one will still do 130mph+, they're comfy (in relation to more modern
stuff), the tyres are generally a bit poo, due to limited choice and they
sound a bit shite thanks to Mr Honda's decision to stick whacking great
silencers on each cylinder that wouldn't look amiss on a 750 4-stroke of the
    time.

But they're a lot more mechanically sturdy than some would have you
believe - my 500 had covered nearly 30,000 miles on the standard crank
pistons and cylinders before I had the conversion done, and the parts taken
off it are all still in good nick.

Of course a 200 mile round trip would mean 2 full tanks+ of fuel if you're
doing anything other than going very very slow....

  20. In uk.rec.motorcycles, Lozzo amazed us all with this pearl of wisdom:
Loz, on a completely different note, when I was in Makro earlier they
were knocking out mini-motos. I *almost* bought one. I didn't know how
much they were and I was only going to buy one for the *OSMs for
laffin' in the car park with but by Christ, the build quality was
fucking shocking! Plastic fucking clip-ons that didn't actually clip on
(they waved about loose) and some other plasticy screws. In fact I don't
think there was any metal on the thing apart from the chain and possibly
    the frame.[1]

Still, I bet it would last longer than a Harley.

[1] What they did have though was some mini-quads. Looked a right laugh
    and built properly, too.
