Right then, this Beemer of mine. Recently it's got a little unwilling to
run in the wet, i.e. if I wash it, it won't start. If I'm out and it
starts to rain it starts misfiring.

Now, when it wouldn't start a couple of days ago I checked and I was
getting spark. Not a big fat pyrotechnic spark, but a spark nonetheless.
Not enough of a spark though, I'd suggest.

So what is it that stops the ignition working properly in the wet?
Leads? Coil? Electronic ignition module thingy? Wiring connections?
Left-handed froggle-grommet? All of the above?

I'd rather not replace everything if it's not necessary so pointers
welcome. If I have to get the Avo out and open the only pages of the
HBOL that don't have oil on then so be it.

Gyp was seen penning the following ode to ... whatever:
Grey coil? Potentially the original? Check for cracks. Most likely
it's fucked, and they all do that.

Replace with adapted R1100 coil. Far better, doesn't crack, cheaper to
    replace if it goes wrong?

Is that the original coil? The monos were known for that. The old coil off
mine had three full-length splits in it.

There's two fixes: either slather the thing in grease and freezer bags, or
    New Coil.

A good test to see if this is actually the cause of the problem is to borrow
the new coil orf the Evil Twin, which is not currently using it much.

Get somewhere nice and dark in the wet and fire it up. Look for sparks.

It's the same fault I mentioned a few days ago and you made a note then
and you don't get anything for a pair of faults.

But it's only 15 years old FFS. What sort of reliability and build
    quality is that?

I've never had to replace a coil on an RD yet, and lots of those I've
owned have been well over 15 years old. Buy a proper bike.

As the R1100 coil is 1/2 the price, what adaptation is required?

  18. Check the float bowls for water - the old Bings were notorious for it.
