Eh, when down the evolutionary ladder did that happen? Canines just
chase things, christ even a chiwawa(sp?) will go bonkers sometimes.
It's what all dogs do left to their own devices.
Mind you, always nice to see a city cat have a go at a big rabit and get
the daylights kicked out of it. I love cats, but sometimes the
sanctimonious little twerps need putting in their places :)

  13. That really sucks.

Our poor little kitten got badly beaten up by a neighbour's tomcat on
    her first venturing outdoors.

Spent a lot of time (and money) at the vets, fortunately she scraped
    through.

    Hope yours turns out okay.

  15. Amen to that last line.

I'm a cat lover and never got into dogs, but I've always thought is
was funny to see one of my cats get their come-uppance.

I also recall about 25 years ago when one of my cats, who would only
have been 6 months old at the time, have a German Shepherd harrass the
shit out of him. He just put his fur up and swiped this huge dog
across the nose, who consequently ran off yelping up the road. They
both need to realise their place. The cat I was referring to went
missing not long after that while I was away on a bike ride in South
Australia. Dunno what happened to him. Maybe the dog got revenge or
the little bugger bit off more than he could chew with a snake or
something (we were living on the edge of a few acres of bush and there
were quite a few snakes in that area).

  16. Hmm.

When our cat got mullered by the neighbour's tom we just put it down to
cats doing cat stuff. Fortunately the ?700 odd vet bill was insured.
We obviously told our neighbour about it, he was a little defensive
though, prolly expecting us to demand payment (which was never the
intention). Mind you, owning an un-neutered, un vaccinated tom cat in
a small residential neighbourhood is not (imo) responsible cat
    ownership.

I suppose the same could be said for poor old Krusty's mog, i.e. dogs
being dogs, however it would tend to make me a little uneasy as a dog
with an attitude is a much nastier thing to deal with than a cat, ime.

I wonder what the general attitude would be if the 2 dogs in question
did the same thing to someone's small dog whilst out walking in the
    park.

They would, given the chance. They go after everything, hence aren't
ever let off the lead outside the garden. They also spend up to 12
hours a day locked in cages in the garden while she's at work. Her
excuse for this is her marriage broke down so she had to get a job.
Well I had a dog when my marriage failed too, but I found a new home
for him rather than leave him locked in for 10+ hours a day.

I actually feel sorry for the dogs - she should've found new homes for
    them years ago.

As for a lot of other stuff in this thread - well it's bullshit. My
parents had a lurcher, which never showed any interest in their several
cats, some of which they had before getting the lurcher & some after. A
mate in Swindon has a lurcher & an Irish Wolfhound - & a couple of
cats. My previous dog was a Collie/GSH cross, & chased everything. My
current dog is a Collie/GSH cross, & again, shows no interest in either
my cats or the couple of wild ones that visit regularly.

Some breeds may be instinctively more likely to chase, but whether they
do or not is entirely down to how they're trained. Once they've made a
kill, it's game over, & if they're anywhere near a residential area
where cats roam, the only responsible thing to do is re-home them or
    muzzle them when outside imo.

I pretty well don't dislike any animals but prefer some over others as
    *pets*.

Whenever I go round someone's house who has a cat or a dog I'll
generally find either on my lap (cat) or at my feet (dog).

However, in all the times I've been with / stroked dogs I've never had
one bite or scratch me just because it feels like it.[1]
I guess, and hence most people seem to go heads or tails (rather than
both). When I had dogs they were something I could take out for a
walk, would be there as company in the same way a human might (ie,
actually there, not out somewhere) and seem to understand and
interact with you. Like, if I said "cat's" to any of mine the ears
would prick up and they would be out the back garden like a shot [2],
I'm not sure you could say 'mice' to a cat and have it do the same?
I'm not saying cat's aren't intelligent (as they obviously are) but to
my mind they aren't the same sort of companion, protector or potential
assistant as a dog [3] and so don't do anything for me (I'd nearly
include toy dogs in the same latter category).

We have always had Whippets as a family (my sister still has one) and
you couldn't ask for a more clean, friendly, loving and fun pet. Happy
to sleep if you are busy and will run like the wind when outside. Not
too big, not too small are 'sight hounds' so have good eyes and don't
suffer any particular problems in old age as they were bred for simple
efficiency, not some other bizarre mutated characteristic. Also yer
classic coal miners pet, slept on the end of the kids bed, nearly as
good a ratter as a terrier, part of the family and tough in spite of
    their fragile looks etc.

    All the best ..

[1] Puppies excepted but that's just part of their play / learning.

[2] No cats were ever harmed in the telling of this story.

[3] Not seen a search and rescue cat, drug sniffer cat, cat for the
blind, guard cat, gun cat ... ;-)

Our chickens gang up on cats. Most of the time my wife's chickens pick
on the kids chickens but not when there's a cat around. One cat got
chased out of our garden into next door's where there's a FO big black
labrador. I've never seen a cat move so fast.
