Bugger. We've lost several in the last few years, and it doesn't get
    any easier.

And heartless as it may seem, sometimes getting kittens to fill the
    void can really work.

We didn't have a void as such, but two new ginger+white babies are
    currently running us ragged.

    Bugger.

    Poor little thing.

As Ace has said, getting another may well be a good plan - it certainly
helped when we lost one of ours.

I can't I follow this logic, lurchers were bred to instinctively chase
and kill smaller animals, in exactly the same way cats hunt and kill
    birds.

Would you also disown a cat for following it's instinct - if not,
what's the subtle difference I'm missing?

Sorry to hear that, but relieved that the cat isn't suffering any
    more.

I've cradled two cats in my arms so far, as the end came, and it
doesn't get any easier. You have my sympathies. Try to remember the
happiness your cat gave you and you it.

  16. Your not missing anything people just get misty eyed over thier pet
cats and sometimes forget they are killers and are one of the few
animals that will torment and torcher its prey before they finally kill
    it

One of my cats was a bastard for it , she used to chew the front leg
off rats and split the gut open , i lost count how many i shot in the
    garden the squeals were terrible

Gone=destroyed? English not your first language?

And anyway, the post from Krusty strongly implied that the neighbours
were taking some action by themselves. Nowhere has he sais that he's
    done, or is doing, anything.

    That's why I wouldn't trust one
There's a subtle, but (to me) important difference - cats haven't been
    *bred* to do this.

Indeed, and aren't many creatures 'capable of' though, be they cats,
    dogs or hedgehogs?

My Lurcher attacked (well, bit once) what it thought was prey (a tiny
white dog). What purpose was the Lurcher bread for (hunting small
fluffy things) and what purpose was the small white dog bred for, to
be a toy / pet, similar to cats or rabbits.

How long would the toy dog survive in the wild I wonder? (not long
looking like a rabbit I guess)!

The same Lurcher has (had) never gone for any other dog, ever.

He also never really retaliated, even when started on by other dogs or
provoked by kids that didn't know better, unlike many cats I have
experienced, even when just stroking them!

As you say, terrible thing and especially for Krusty to have witnessed
(and partly why we don't have any pets any more).

    All the best ..

p.s. When the revolution comes we will probably be out hunting with
dogs again for our dinner (I don't hunt yet btw).
