    ****. I'm so sorry.

I couldn't deal with that either. Couldn't handle losing two on the
roads when I was with my folks and I've sworn I'll never have one
    again.

My parents have a lurcher and she's a lovely dog but her instinct is
to chase. If she did something like that I 'd never be able to deal
    with her again.

So did ours, our whippets ...!
When we first got our lurcher from the Wood Green Animal Shelter we
felt he had never seen stairs or kitchen lino so may not have come
from a house (so a caravan maybe)?

He didn't have a violent bone in his body but he did once (in the 12
years we had him) let his instincts take over.

I was walking him in a local large park and we passed in the opposite
direction, someone walking a small white, rabbit sized dog. As we got
within a yard or so our lurcher just grabbed this dog and threw it in
the air. I instantly went to pull him back on the lead but it was one
of those recoiling ones and I forgot to press the brake, so all I
managed to do was burn my finger. Before he could have another go I
batted him away with the side of my welly and started to apologize to
the owner as she briefly checked her dog (it was ok).

Then she had a go at me for "kicking my dog"!?

I tried to explain that I didn't actually kick him (between further
apologies) but all she was interested in was in telling me off!

He would always chase a cat when off the lead in his own garden but
even if it was cornered wouldn't generally do much other than bark at
it till he got bored or it ran away, it was the 'Blue' Whippet that
would have done damage, had she bothered to chase it (she generally
    wasn't).

I did rescue a cat from our house a while back. It climbed in through
our downstairs toilet window and fallen into the toilet, then in it's
panic to get away tore half the wallpaper off the wall. :-(

Personally, I wouldn't allow cat's to 'roam'. They aren't native to
this country (domestic cats) but predate on many wild birds / animals,
often for fun (some to the good I guess like rats / mice ...
personally I'd rather have the rats). ;-)

Also, anyone who has crashed whilst swerving to avoid a cat (which are
allowed to roam, dogs must be 'under control' and if not can be
rounded up and other wild animals are just that, wild) or had to pick
up their squashed remains will probably agree some better control or
    owner responsibility would be welcomed.

    All the best ..

  3. Gundogs must manage it ok.

More importantly, I hope PipL doesn't think I'm having a go.

Ex's son & girlfriend came round armed with wine. I wish the room would
    stay still.

Vet phoned & things aren't looking good. The senior nurse has taken
Simba home with her, & is going to stay up with him all night. I'm
expecting a call sometime in the next few hours to ask the question :-(

He's not. I'm still well ahead when comparing insurance costs to actual
    vet's bills over the years.
I think things are already happening on that front. They were out
earlier cleaning out all the kennels, then the woman went for a walk on
her own, which she never does. She knows I've got two other cats, & her
son's girlfriend has recently moved into a 'shed' in her garden & also
has a cat. I wouldn't be surprised if the dogs are gone by the end of
    the week.

I wouldn't go that far, but I'd certainly make sure it was muzzled when
    outside & off a lead.

  8. If killing your dog made you feel better about things, then fair
enough. You can only do whatever you think is right.

ITYF most dogs can tell the difference. You're in their pack, cats
aren't. One of my aunts brought back four Airdales from Kenya. Amongst
other exploits they'd treed a leopard until my aunt could fetch her
rifle, and run down and killed a buck unaided. Four gentler dogs with
kids you couldn't hope to meet.

    I couldn't have a dog I didn't trust and I couldn't, in good
conscience, pass it on to someone else knowing what it was likely to
do. But then that's how I was raised and I've seen my uncle shoot a
dog for worrying sheep so perhaps I just take a harder view.

If I suspected it was something the dog was capable of, as Krusty
said, it would go out muzzled.
