Do you make a career out of wrong assumptions? They're locked in small
cages when she's at work, then let out into a fenced off area of the
garden when she's at home. They should be muzzled when out the cages, &
in fact they shouldn't be in the cages in the first place - *that's*
    cruel.

Here's an idea that only an irresponsible cat (or dog for that matter)
    owner wouldn't willingly take up.

Part of the ownership registration involves taking a DNA sample from
    the 'pet'.

Any crap found where is shouldn't be (private back garden, pavement,
park etc) can be tested (small fee to suitable agency or home kit
whatever), traced to the owner and the owner requested to either:

Do the cleanup within a reasonable timescale.

    or

Pay to have it cleaned up.

I reckon any owner of any persistently fouling animal will get rid of
their 'pet' on their own! ;-)

    All the best ..

    T i m

p.s. Can't see the above idea actually catching on (for all sorts of
reasons) but *I* think it's a good idea!

My mistake. Over educated, but a bit thick.
Hint: I haven't called anyone uneducated.
Exceptions used to prove the rule. There are quite a few Latin words
in common english usage. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I didn't think
'Errare humanum est' were three of them.
Yes. Another profession, prone to obfuscation. I was going to include
them in my earlier post but felt you'd be above digression.
No, but English would have been nice.
You still seem to be under the mistaken impression that I did not
understand your 'To err is human' post. I did understand it, I just
think you were a **** for saying it and saying it in Latin. A very
Blairesque response IMO. Someone else who doesn't understand the
meaning of, or feel the need for, a straight forward apology.

    Commiserations.

I can't help thinking that a few holes cut in the bottom of the fence
could have given him an escape route, but then hindsight tends to have
    20:20 vision.

As others have said, adopting another can help ease things. Go have a
mooch round the local rescue shelter, maybe?

You really are a fucking idiot aren't you. Keeping them locked up in
small cages up to 12 hours a day is responsible, is it? No, it's
fucking selfish & cruel. They're not pets to her, they're a lifestyle
accessory. And there are plenty of places that'll take lurchers & find
them new homes. My parents' lurcher came from a rescue centre & had a
    reputation for biting kids, ffs.
Where the **** have I said anything about wanting the dogs to suffer?
Try reading what's written rather than making assumptions. Or better
still, just shut the **** up.

Out in the sticks would be best, near fields where they can do what
they were bred for - chasing down rabbits.

I've only been back here for 5 mins, and it even appears to me that the
    answer appears to be "yes".

It's not hindsight though - that's what I said to her when she first
put the fence up. Having seen it all unfold, he'd still be alive if
    she'd done that.

I've got two more cats, so if the dogs are still there come Sunday &
she hasn't modified the fence, I'll know exactly the sort of person she
is. I'll then play my trump card, which will leave her son & his
girlfriend homeless & cost her thousands.

It's not being made any easier for you is it?

Think how I feel at the moment, I'm trying to sort out our winter
holiday (1) rather than just blowing all my cash on an MV and I'm
being distracted by Phil struggling with his anger management...

    (1) Bermuda looks good at the moment but things could change within

    Heh - it gets worse - he's a born again. A couple of times he's had a
mate round & they've sat in their garden playing guitar & singing
god-bothering songs. I thanked the lord too - for the fast idle knob on
    the MV...
