The time has come, it seems. New average speed cameras are going in along the A537, better known as the Cat and Fiddle, aka "The Most Dangerous Road in Britain". http://www.mysaferroads.org.uk/news_more.asp?news_id=21&current_id=1 They claim to have done all sorts of stuff to the road to make it safer - but how they justify "high-friction surfacing" juxtaposed against "safety markings painted in red on the road" causes a raised eyebrow here. Most pointedly, as apparently 76% of the CnF casualties are speeding motorcyclists, the cameras are a new breed: facing the rear of vehicles passing them. Not only this, they're not just monitoring the average speed of a vehicle passing between pairs, but between /any two cameras/. They've linked them all together, ensuring no escape ... providing they can read the plate, of course. The really nasty bit of this, to me, is that they've rumbled the A54 as well - that joins the A537 up towards the pub at the top and to me is one of the best roads I've ridden: twisty, lumpy, three-dimensional. Many's the time I've blissfully hooned the 54, being able to see the helicopter overlooking the 537 and giggling quietly to myself. Those days are over, obviously. Fucking Nanny State.
