It cost £60 plus whatever contribution the rest of the french population pay
through taxes. And the question I can't answer is why should people who
aren't making that journey help pay for it? Nobody subsidises your trips by
    car or bike.

I feel the same way about the erosion of what few personal freedoms I
have left. It is not a journey I want to make but I am having to pay
    for it nonetheless.

    Taxman does.

I found myself musing, while reading this, and not for the first time,
that when a ukrm FOAK posts on his or her specialist subject, whether
you're interested in that subject or not, the result is always a post
    worth reading.

Fair enough, but it still leaves the fact that the actual
infrastructure and the trains are knocking spots of the same in most
other European countries, if not all.

The only on that is starting to come close (IIRC) is Spain, as they've
put big investment in their network over the last few years (high speed
    link side).

Are you any good at your job? That's where Paul's knowledge comes
from,[1] it;s just unlike IT bollocks there are more than three other
    people interested in it.

[1] As well as being a sad anorak.

I had a buss pass once, if that helps. Plus I've owned a 7 day rail
card. That's almost an MCSE in transport.

S'gonna make it fun when the truck breaks down... can't always get the unit
and trailer up the verge, so we are back to 3 lanes almost instantly!

Can't simply be that: just as people need to know a bit about computers to
have made it this far, nearly all of them will have *some* experience of
    public transport.

It's the interested part. There are loads of people asking and answering
questions about computery things, but apart from those directly concenred
few would find them interesting: I usually kill the thread immediately.
Mind you, I kill most of the public transport threads, too.

What seemed to make Paul's posts interesting was the compehensive and
authoritative nature of the content. Most of the IT/IS bollocks is just
    that.

I avoid wading into threads about "wot linux distro should I use",
because I simply can't be arsed. The moment somebody asks a question
about large IP networks, enterprise storage, cross-platform hosting
solutions or DNS I'm sure I'll be right in there, but it's always
    about crappy home PCs.

Still, might not give me guru status on ukrm, but it certainly pays the
    bills. :)

I'll post a "OT: I want to build a large IP network with enterprise
storage and cross-platform hosting. What does the FOAK think?" question
if you'll do a "OT: What does the FOAK think about helicopter mission
    planning software?" thread.
