I don't know anyone who has, not saying it hasn't happened though.

I've suspected that an H1 I had slipped the clutch because of oil, but
since I stripped the clutch when I changed the oil it's hard to tell
    what caused the problem.

So, hands up; who has ruined a clutch or seen problems using car oil in
    a bike- direct experience.

I haven't no, but then I haven't ever used cage oil with a wet clutch.

ISTR we had some discussions about this in the past in this NG, and
decided then that using cage oil wasn't a good idea. Which is why I'm
quite surprised we're even having this thread going now.

Actually I was simply referring to discussions we had in this group a
couple of years ago or so.

Of course if you all want to go and change your minds.......

I was just interested in finding out if anyone had some first hand
evidence of screwing a clutch up, not in revisiting a cage vs bike oil
    thread.

Just because a few people here say that something is so, doesn't make
    it so.

I used Castrol GTX 10/40 in all my Jap (i.e. wet clutch 4 strokes) bikes.
It didn't **** them up. Only one had clutch slip, but that was because
it was worn out. Does that help?

Yep, ta. Looks like if your clutch is on it's way out anyway, it may
slip when using cage oils. A far cry from, it'll bugger your bike up.

    Or not so either!

Who said anything about buggering your bike up?

Although a clutch exploding could throw nasty bits around the engine.

One thing is for sure, nobody here actually seems to know, at least not
beyond the 'it's never happened to me' statements anyway.

  11. It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the
drugs began to take hold. I remember saying
    something like:
I've always used car oil and experienced minor clutch slip immediately
after a change just the once. That clutch was on the way out anyway and
    was replaced some 10k later.

I've never owned what might be condsidered a high power bike, though, so
I *might* be a bit leary of using car oil in a gsxr1000 or somesuch, but
I can't see it doing any permanent harm. A simple drain and refill with
    bike oil should fix it.

In cases like this, empirical evidence is as good as any. May I point at
the GSs in my sig? A combined total of 300+Kmiles between them and the
vast majority of that done in my ownership using car oil exclusively.
Nothing ever had to come apart because of mechanical wear due to
    inadequate oiling.

It's not inadequate oiling that's the problem, quite the reverse in
    fact.

Of course I understand the point, it's one I argue a lot in my own
trade. My main concern is using cage oil on clutches that are already
soaked in bike oil. If you use car oil from the outset it certainly
    shouldn't be an issue.

Err.. someone did. Can't remember who, I deleted the article. To lazy to
    google for it.
Swot appears to be the case, yeh.

FWIW, I just got the FJ owners club catalogue off their web site, and I
can't see what the fuss is about, they sell Morris Sport 10/40 oil for
motorbikes (Synthetic Fortified), for £15. This is *less* than most
    decent cage oils.

Morris are a well regarded brand as well.

Nice stuff it is, the classic car clubs have recommended it for years,
and they make the *only* lead substitute that does actually work.

Do they still have the oil testing service as well?

It's only one of the places I've seen it raved about, but both the BMW
'specialists', and the FJ owners club sell it too.
They do indeed. Quite a good site as well, well worth a read.

I always buy it if I'm up in Shrewsbury, but it's not so easy to obtain
    down here

The Guzzi works well with Morris and I used to run the VW Camper on it.
That'd work well with chip fat though.

Speedy Spares on the Old Shoreham Road, Portslade, supply Morris Oils
    locally.

Darsy, where in Enfield can you get Morris oils?

You can buy it mail order from MotorWorks (who also do Guzzi bits too).
