I used a small metal 'tack' type nail to get me home once.... it was
only about 20-25 miles home, but I didn't feel like calling out the AA
    at the time.

I did, however, call them out the following morning to get them to take
the bike to M&P where we fitted a new chain between us in about 5
    minutes.

I'm pretty sure I'm in the b group as well.

Looking at my rear wheel, realising there was smoke coming from it
and gassing it to get past 3 other bikes traveling at speed on the
motorway (I didn't want to be left sitting at the side of the road on
my own) pretty much proves I'm lacking when it comes to mechanical
    sympathy.

You might have that the wrong way round. Paraffin is fine for cleaning
'O' ring chains but I'm not sure if WD40 is.

What a **** of a thing to do. I can't imagine the noise that'd make
    and as for the smoke...

This really surprises me. I would have expected that your trade would
    have encouraged mechanical symptathy.

I expect you to behave and ride like a **** though.

I remember a conversation between Andy and Daz at a BOTAFOT last year
when chains were mentioned and the conversation summary went something
like: Do you lube your chain and replace it every 20,000 miles or do
you leave it dry and replace it at 15,000 miles?

A dry chain doesn't look pretty (Rusty chain + Chrome bike = fashion
emergency) but I assume that Castrol Chain Wax is better than nothing
at all as long as you clean it off properly and apply it again as
    necessary.

I've still got my can downstairs but I've got a can of lube from
wessie that's on permanent loan which I use instead. The Castrol
stuff is kept as an 'emergency' can, if there is such a thing.

I applied it to a warm chain and it looked like this:

    <http://hayn.gotadsl.co.uk/bike/crash/bodge/chain.jpg>

Okay, I applied it too near the sprockets for reasons that are best
left unexplained but it looked absolutely fucking horrid. You can
imagine what the "100 miles later" shot of that horrid creamy wax was.

I put the can away after just two applications and even after
thousands of miles I couldn't get all of it off, even after four coats
of parafin, brushing, low-pressure washer, applications of chainsaw
oil, normal chain lube and de-greaser it wouldn't go.

Unless there's a really, really good reason I'd rather spray cat spunk
mixed with piss and some warm lard on the chain than put Castrol Chain
    Wax anywhere near it again.

  12. In uk.rec.motorcycles, steve auvache belched forth and ejected the
    following:
I've got some PTFE stuff. Dry it is. One can't tell if it's working or
    not.

    I've used it once.
I'd see a doctor about that, IIWY.

I'd have thought you get through two tyres in that mileage.

Memory tells me that Champ isn't brutal on tyres.

The rear on my 10R has done just over 3k miles and still has a bit of
life in it but it's traffic light drags that fucks them up and I never
really bother ragging the bike away from lights and the like.

I never used to be. I typically get between 3 and 4 thousand from a
rear, regardless of bike or tyre type. This is unless I fit AV45/46s, in
which case I can easily double that figure and add some.
The Bandit tyre is half worn, that means it has 2 years life left. It's
an AV46 ST. I have only just scrubbed in a new set of 014s on the Gixer,
but I've hardly ridden it recently.

My personal experience is that it's fine. And AFAIK WD40 is
a mix of hydrocarbons and little else, just what the O-rings
    like.

Since about a year I'm doing an experiment. After telling
everybody why they need thick lubricant on the chain and
WD40 or similar is too thin and not enough rust prevention,
I'm using the stuff as chain spray myself. Signs are good
    this far.
Very clean chain, no more corrosion than normal and not
a lot of noise. Thin oil everywhere but does not look too
    bad and washes off easily.
I'm still not advising people to do the same as I'm not
    sure about long term effects.

I get given the stuff free by Shell (their equivalent) as I'm
sponsored by them for the racing, and it just goes straight
into the bin as I wouldn't even give it away.
