Surely that can't be the only reason he thinks you're a ****?

I've got zero NCD - had company cars for years.

Ah, in that case congrats for being in the best post code area in
Britain, alternatively that's a bloody cheap quote.

I just got quoted on a 2003 Volvo S40 2.0T SE with all the toys and
leather, the 140mph/165bhp low pressure turbo model - 419 quid comp. I
think I may be changing my mind about what car to look for.

Go classic! Just renewed mine - 3.8 litre, FC, agreed value, unlimited
mileage, full Euro and UK breakdown, South Coast with a declared
    disqualification...

If you're baulking at those prices, then consider this:

I pay around £250 TPFT on my 99 Accord 2.0 SE Exec; age 45, 12 years
NCB, no claims or convictions and no loadings for medical stuff. FC
would be similar to your quotes.

    My Mum's being quoted about £250 FC on a 2 year-old 1.2 Panda; full
NCB, no claims, etc. aged 65, retired widow, <5000 miles per year.

With no NCB, I reckon those quotes are about what I'd expect them to
    be, TBH.

    Have a look here:

to see how a small tweak to your occupation can help reduce the
premium. There are other useful hints on that site, too.
