Carbs?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Milo Thurston, Jul 11, 2005.

  1. Can anyone suggest what might cause the following symptoms (on a
    Trident)?
    - Rough idling.
    - Idle speed lower than usual.
    - Distinct smell of petrol.
It's been happening after a 20 mile ride.
    Thanks.

    You left the choke on.

  4. Definitely not - unless the mechanism is stuck and it's staying on
when the lever is in the "off" position.

  5. Probably a good idea to check that.

It wasn't really a serious suggestion, but it's worth checking the
mechanism anyway. However it's most likely a knackered/dirty float
needle valve causing the float bowl to overfill. You may find the
excess fuel is flowing through the inlet rubber into your airbox,
causing the strong smell of petrol.

  7. I've tried draining the bowls a little, and will see how that goes.
If that doesn't fix it, then I'll probably have to get someone to
take a look at it. The carbs aren't easy to get at on this bike.
    Thanks.

    Bollerx!

I got a full faired 1200 Trophy and they are just as simple to remove unless
you got summat strange on there.

Rip the tank off, remove the carbs as per HBoL

Clean thoroughly with proprietary carb cleaner and check float heights.

Also look at the inline filters if fitted which sometimes get blocked.

Might be sticking choke as suggested elsewhere.

    What carbs are on there?

By "easy" I meant "can be done without taking the
    tank off".
    Just the standard Mikuni ones.

    A blocked air filter?

BTW, and I know it's a long shot. It wasn't you I met outside J&S on
    Saturday was it?

My bike stinks of petrol when it needs cleaning or changing.

This is what I would have said, plus the floats.

Mine was also running rough but in my research one guy said "check the
diaphragms" in case one was torn / holed - they were all OK, but it is a
possibility and if not centered, the needle might well foul and stick
slightly up/open making it too rich (mine was) .... They are fiddly - in
the end Jack Lilley had it and spent 8 hours sorting it with different
needle profiles, but only charged me for 3 hours - Thanks Jack Lilley - I
will buy a Triumph off you one day - love the triples !
