    Hi all,

I'm in the process of rebuilding my XR's carbi and was wondering if I
should use any sort of gasket sealant when installing the gaskets and
o-ring seals? Someone once suggested using a smear of grease (rubber
    grease?).

Should I use a sealant or just install them dry?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

    Regards,

    Ben.

  2. They're gaskets and seals. They seal. Fit them dry.

The only time I ever smear anything on gaskets is if I want to hold them
in position while I marry up the jointing surfaces: some gaskets or
seals have an annoying tendency to go *fwippp!* and peel off at the
wrong moment - the big o-ring that seals the Ducati's filler cap
    assembly[1] is one such.

[1] Needs to be removed to change the fuel filter inside the tank, if
    you're wondering.

You do need to lubricate o-rings in a sliding or rotating situation.
Brake calipers and pneumatic nailguns (OTish but a great example) use
grease on the o-rings that seal pistons and valves and I would think some
suspension or powervalve applications might need lubricated o-rings. Of
course you are dead on target for static applications.

All valid replies. Dry gaskets are supposed to be installed dry, and o -
rings and seals are designed to be installed as - is. However, I have
found that some orings and seals don't go in very "nicely". The one
product that I have found to be safe to properly lubricate these things
is Dow Corning's DC 4. It's alot like petroleum jelly, but safe on buna
    n rubber. HTH
