Turning the mixture screw clockwise. Is it leaner or richer?? Manual just says my mix it too rich.

Most carbs get richer as you unscrew the mixture screw (anticlockwise). If the screw is on the filter side of the carb instead of the engine side, it may get leaner as you unscrew it.
It was somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold. I remember "Linger" Depends on the carb. What does the manual say about the start setting for the mixture screw? Usually it'll say something like, "Bottom the mixture screw and unscrew it 11/2 turns". That'll give you a datum setting to bugger around from. -- Dave GS 850 x2 / SE 6a SbS#6 DIAABTCOD#16 APOSTLE#6 FUB#3 FUB KotL OSOS#12? UKRMMA#19 COSOC#10
General rule - if the screw's on the filter side, it's an air screw, so in to richen. If it's on the engine side, it's a fuel screw, so out to richen. That's a very clever manual you've got there though - how does it know?
You know the mixture screw only really affects things up to about 1/8th throttle though? If you've done a plug chop on half or full throttle & found oily plugs, the mixture screw isn't your problem. As a rough guide for setting the idle mixture, find the point that gives the highest idle speed by twiddling the screw a quarter turn at a time, then screw it back in 1/8 - 1/4 turn from there. The main jet, needle position, needle taper & slide cutout are all together more difficult to pin down. It's worth asking on the Yahoo KTM group if you haven't already - they may have all sorts of tips & tricks.
