Carb balancing? SWK?

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Dave Jennings, Apr 20, 2005.

  1. Apparently I need the carbs balanced on the VS. ( Had Stage 1 put in
recently during a rebuild, but spaner monkey was unable to fully finish
it off due to breaking his arm, the fuckwit. )

Running rough as **** on the throttle, although fine at tickover. He
suggested the carbs need balanced as he didn't have the time to do that.

Piece of piss to SWK, or a pain in the arse? I hate to put it into the
dealer without having a bit of a clue.

can you see the vacuum outlets on the carb rubbers ? if you can touch
them and the adjusters are get at able with a screwdriver then you can
do it, Tank probably has to come off and a small petrol supply rigged
up. Washing up bottle is often used.

Ta. I'll have a look in the morning, as TBH I haven't a fucking clue.
Assuming they are visible ( I'll check my Clymer BoL to make sure I'm
looking at the right thing! ) then is it a relatively easy procedure
then? I mean, I won't be doing it FFS. I can hardly put air in the
    fucking tyres. 8^)

Depending on accessibility of the carbs, piece of piss. 2 carbs are far
easier to balance than 3 or 4, and those that have linkages joining the
carbs (rather than long cables a la BMW twins) are even easier.

Do the outside two adjusters so cards 1-2 are the same then 3-4 are
the same then the middle one so 12-34 are the same

I'd really expect a bike to run rough at tick over and be smoother on
the throttle if the carbs needed a ballance. Maybe one of the needle
shims or something is wrong / missing / whatever..

Could be cable lengths are not set correctly - this could give a good
    idle and crap throttle.

I don't know if these bikes have cables going to each carb/throttle body.

At idle the slides are not 'on the cable' but set by mixture screws and
throttle stops. When the throttle is open the slide's respective
positions to each other could differ causing the imbalance.

Yup, rejetted with Dynojet Stage 1 kit. Which it turns out can be a
    bugger to tune.

Got put onto a company who do nothing but carb setups. They say I
should leave my bike for a week, and it's a minimum cost of 250ukp to
set it up, more depending if any other work needs done to "complement"
    the tweaks.

Now, I don't want it "tuned up" - it's a fucking lump of an engine. Is
this what it's likely to cost, or are they wanting me to do more than
    just get it running better?

They're having a laugh - at your expense.

Setting the cables and balancing the carbs shouldn't take more than a
couple of hours from start to finish. Less than a third of that
    quote.

Ta, I had that suspicion myself! I mean, I could maybe see it if I was
giving them the 6R to set up or something, not a fucking 1400cc twin!

Right, I'll keep sniffing around then!!

Ah! I'd assumed because he'd got such a gay bike he may be quite local.

difference and have you noticed people call you a twat?
